A TikTok has made a connection between the plot of Both the Twilight films and Coraline are based on popular young adult books first published in the early to mid-2000s, written by Stephanie Meyer and Neil Gaiman, respectively. Both received film adaptations, with the first Twilight film releasing in 2008 and Henry Sellick's adaptation of Coraline releasing shortly thereafter in 2009.
Coraline and The Twilight Saga share some similarities in genre. While the Twilight films are focused on young adult romance and Coraline is more like a contemporary fairy tale, both draw on supernatural and fantasy elements to tell coming of age stories set in the present. The Twilight Saga tells the story of Bella, as she falls in love with Edward, a vampire, before ultimately becoming one herself and ing his family of peaceful vampires, the Cullens, in the fifth film. Coraline follows Coraline Jones, a precocious young girl who discovers a tiny door in her new home that leads her to an alternate world where she meets versions of her parents who have buttons for eyes. Despite initially seeing this realm as an idealized version of her life, Coraline soon discovers that her "Other Mother" is a demonic entity hell bent on claiming her soul for her own.
While these stories may seem radically different, TikTok corinnieeeee recently laid out some eerie similarities between Edward's wooing of Bella and the Other Mother's attempts to steal Coraline away from her real family. In the video, Corinne states that Edward, much like the Other Mother, possesses the supernatural gift to appear appealing to his prey, drawing them in before consuming their lifeforce. She also draws parallels between how the Cullens, while undead, appear as they would have in their prime of life, much like how the alternate versions of Coraline's neighbors in the "other" world are beautiful, empty shells of the real people they were in their heyday. The key difference Corinne points out between the two stories is that Coraline becomes disillusioned with the fantasy world the Other Mother presents, while Bella falls for Edward hook line and sinker.

This is not the first time that audiences have seen a dark side to Edward and Bella's relationship. After the release of the films, many viewers pointed out that Edward's proclivity for sneaking into Bella's room in the dead of night was deeply disturbing. Audiences were not the only ones who felt this way; an initial draft of the first Twilight film even went so far as to reimagine Bella as a gun-toting vampire slayer in a radical departure from Meyer's novels. While neither Twilight nor Coraline is likely to be followed up anytime soon, both films have had a massive impact on the modern film landscape. Twilight stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart both appeared in critically beloved movies this year, with Stewart starring in David Cronenberg's Cannes Film Festival darling Crimes of the Future and Pattinson donning the cape and cowl in The Batman. Neil Gaiman's work also remains relevant, with the author's beloved comic book series, The Sandman, being adapted in a new Netflix series.
