Robert Pattinson has taken on countless fascinating roles that are anything like his The Batman in 2022 and will have a part in the film adaptation of the science-fiction novel Mickey7. While Edward is sweet and romantic but also seen as problematic in some ways, Pattinson's other characters definitely can't be put in the same box.
Edward loves Bella Swan from the moment that he meets her, but throughout the five films in the popular Twilight franchise, Edward has many quotes that are hard not to wince at.
"Ask Me The Most Basic Question: What Do We Eat?"
Edward says this quote in the 2008 movie
While there are sad things about Edward Cullen, he also has some cringeworthy lines throughout all five movies, especially when talking about being a vampire. Edward's desire for Bella to ask him if the Cullens drink human blood seems too obvious, and it doesn't seem necessary for him to phrase it like this.
By this point, Bella can tell that Edward isn't human, and she knows the score. She's willing to continue spending time with Edward because she has feelings for him right away, and Edward should tell Bella some less obvious information.
"What If I'm Not The Hero? What If I Am The Bad Guy?"
Edward upsets Bella with this question
Throughout the first two movies, Edward is constantly trying to convince Bella that he shouldn't turn her into a vampire and she should run far away from him. Edward doesn't think that Bella knows what she's getting into, which bothers Bella, who wants to move ahead with this plan.
Edward's question about being "the bad guy" might be key to the plot, as he needs Bella to realize that there is a lot about this world that she isn't aware of. Still, it's really corny for Edward to phrase it like this.
"You Can't Trust Vampires."
Edward makes this joke in the New Moon
Edward doesn't joke around a lot, although he is warm and friendly toward Bella. But Edward is often concerned about Bella's well-being, and later, the Volturi, so it makes sense that he's often serious and worried.
Edward does try to make light of his situation sometimes, like when he says that Bella "can't trust vampires" in The Twilight Saga: New Moon. It's not quite as hilarious as Edward wants it to be and comes off as cheesy.
"The Lion Fell In Love With The Lamb."
Edward's well-known line is awkward
While Bella chooses between Jacob Black and Edward, she is clearly interested in Edward as soon as she sees him at school. Bella cares about Jacob as a friend, but she doesn't think that this is the path that she wants to go down. Perhaps the most famous line in the first Twilight film is when Edward makes this statement and continues that he's a "sick, masochistic lion."
There doesn't seem to be any reason for Edward to refer to himself this way and it's difficult not to cringe at this conversation. It's clear that Edward is stronger than Bella since he's not human, but this quote suggests an uncomfortable power dynamic.
"It's My Job To Protect You. From Everyone, Except My Sister."
Edward is tough with Bella in the second film
In The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Edward can tell that Bella is in danger and also that she has bonded with his sister Alice Cullen. He says this quote about keeping her safe and making sure that she's okay and acknowledges that Alice will play a role in this, too.
While it's sweet that Alice cares about Bella, Edward's constant need to help Bella and his belief that she can't always stand up for herself is one of the most criticized aspects of the franchise. Bella is definitely stronger than Edward gives her credit for.
"I Don't Have The Strength To Stay Away From You Anymore."
Edward is drawn to Bella in the first movie
Bella is confused about how long it takes Edward to become comfortable with them dating, which is confusing since he's right to have questions, concerns and reservations. Eventually, Edward tells Bella that he can't be away from her.
While this is romantic in some ways, Edward's statement that he's too weak feels overly intense. The first few times Edward talks about his physical and mental strength, it make sense, but he can defintiely go overboard.
"You're Like My Own Personal Brand Of Heroin."
Edward talks about Bella's scent
The best memes about Bella and Edward's romance chart their love story from day one to when Bella becomes a vampire. When they meet in science class, Edward smells Bella and loves it since, of course, he's a vampire and she's a human. But before long, Edward realizes that he has feelings for Bella and would never dream of hurting her.
This might be the way that the story has to begin, since this isn't going to be a typical meet cute, but it's stil hard to be on board with Edward smelling Bella and comparing her to a serious drug.
"Last Night Was The Best Night Of My Existence."
Edward says this after he and Bella sleep together
Bella and Edward have several conversations about being intimate and Edward always says that it's not possible because he's too strong and he won't be able to control himself. This might be true within the context of this world but still feels tough to hear.
In the first Breaking Dawn film, the couple sleeps together for the first time and the next morning, Edward says it was the "best night" he has ever had. Fans know how much Bella and Edward care about each other, but it still feels cringe-inducing to hear Edward talk about sex as these scenes feel a bit melodramatic.
"I Feel Very Protective Of You."
Edward tells Bella how he has always felt about her
There are some hilarious Twilight quotes and then there are the many times when Edward tells Bella that protecting her is his main goal. This is tough to hear repeated throughout the franchise, as it's clear that Edward loves Bella and will do what he can to make sure that the Volturi doesn't get to her, and it doesn't seem like he has to keep saying this.
When Edward continually tells Bella that he will keep her safe, it takes away her power and agency and even her confidence in some cases. While Bella knows that Edward won't hurt her, she can stand tall and do what is necessary to keep herself safe, too, at least in some circumstances.
"I Like Watching You Sleep."
Edward spends each night in Bella's room in the first movie
Twilight fans find it odd that Edward would be in Bella's bedroom all the time and it gets even weirder when he says that watching her when she's asleep is something that he enjoys. This feels eerie and like the wrong thing to say, and it's confusing that Edward thinks that this is a sweet and swoonworthy statement for him to make.
Although this doesn't bother Bella and she does feel safe in Edward's presence, the fact that a vampire is hanging out in her bedroom at night is still something to be concerned about. Bella also needs more privacy than this as Edward comes on a bit too strong.
