The Twilight Saga was an astonishing success and remains one of the most epic and beloved franchises of all time. Iconic characters like Edward Cullen and Bella Swan made Twilight the cultural phenomenon that it was, but that’s not to say they are the most likable of people.
Conventionally, the main protagonists are the most appealing characters in a movie. However, that’s not the case in this instance, because although Edward and Bella are the stars of the show, there are many other characters that fans prefer over them.
Jacob Black
A vital part of the franchise is Bella's relationship with both Edward and Jacob, but unfortunately for Jacob, this only makes him come off worse. In Twilight, Jacob is the sweet and innocent childhood friend of Bella, however, New Moon brought to light a sullen side to him, and from then on it was hard to find things to like.
Jacob continued the saga as a moody, temperamental person, and someone who displayed severely problematic behavior, like forcing Bella to kiss him. Although it was out of his hands, his character was only made more questionable when he imprinted on the infant Renesmee.
Bella Swan
Although Bella Swan is Kristen Stewart's defining role, that’s not to say she was everyone's favorite character. While she is the main protagonist, she is increasingly bland and has next to no independence. When Bella’s world collides with Edward's, people often question her choices from then on.
There’s no doubt that their love story is pivotal to the plot, however, Bella displays no ambition past Edward. After their breakup, she purposely endangers her own life by cliff jumping and nearly drowning. Although she was hurting, the lengths she went to bring him back to her were drastic.
Rosalie Hale
When Edward brings Bella to meet his family, Rosalie is immediately hostile. In New Moon, it's revealed that Rosalie's bleak outlook on life stems from her hatred of being a vampire, which in turn causes her to envy Bella's human life.
While she was unreasonable when it came to Bella, a more caring side was displayed in the later movies through her relationship with Emmett and bond with Renesme. It was hard not to feel sympathy towards her, however, her overall serious tone and resentment were difficult to enjoy.
Esme Cullen
As she didn't put a foot wrong across all five movies, there's not a bad word to say about Esme. As a mother, she did everything right, from loving her children unconditionally to welcoming Bella into her family with open arms.
Esme didn't have a bad bone in her body and her extremely comionate nature meant she always saw the best in everyone. It was endearing to watch how much Esme loved those around her, especially Carlisle. But unfortunately for Esme herself, her character wasn't explored enough in the movies compared to the books.
Edward Cullen
He is open to all sorts of interpretation and is the main protagonist in the franchise, so Twilight fans continue to have different opinions on Edward Cullen. Although he had a problematic past, ing Carlisle's family proved pivotal in sculpting the respectful and caring person he was when he met Bella.
Die-hard fans adored Edward and Bella's epic love story, yet many believe it was toxic and Edward was too overbearing. It was difficult not to ire the lengths he went to keep Bella safe, however, it should be ed that he was typically what put her at risk in the first place.
Emmett Cullen
Living in a world full of vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures is bound to take its toll, however, Emmett demonstrated there is still plenty of room to play in that environment. Despite being first in line for a fight, Emmett was by far the most relaxed and light-hearted member of the family.
Although his character wasn't explored deeply within the movies, Kellan Lutz's portrayal of Emmett on the surface was a refreshing take on a vampire. Despite having the opposite personality to Rosalie, Emmett was madly in love with her and their surprisingly wholesome Twilight relationship indicated that he had a deeper and more emotional side to him.
Jasper Hale
In Twilight, it seemed like there was nothing to Jasper except a severely tortured look on his face, but as time progressed, he became a fan-favorite member of the Cullens. Jasper's brutal upbringing as a confederate soldier combined with his haunted beginning as a vampire allowed fans to sympathize with him and understand why he acted the way he did.
In of fighting ability, Jasper was as good as they come. His knowledge of newborns and skills allowed him to train up the Cullens and without him, they would’ve been unable to compete with Victoria and her vicious newborn army. There was no one more deserving of a happy ending than Jasper.
Charlie Swan
It was difficult not to like Charlie from his first introduction. He is a loving father whose daughter is his main priority but he is simply trying to find his feet and work out how to navigate having a teenage daughter.
Although he was frequently kept in the dark, Charlie tried to have a positive impact and help people by being chief of police. Despite the harrowing things that happened in his life, his awkward yet charming nature meant he was responsible for some hilarious moments across the five movies.
Carlisle Cullen
As the head of the Cullens, Carlisle was widely respected and had a genuine desire to help people. To avoid bloodshed, he created a family of vampires that were vegetarians who didn't harm people. Carlisle refused to resort to anger or brutality, even when his family was in danger. Instead, he tried to find a calm solution that avoided conflict.
It seemed if anyone had a problem, Carlisle was the one that had the solution. Unlike many vampires, he had a kind and comionate nature, even becoming a doctor to save as many lives as he could.
Alice Cullen
Alice was quirky, fun, and the standout member of the Cullen family. It is evident from the beginning that she exudes warmth and always wants to make people happy, from kindly welcoming Bella to throwing her a birthday party and even planning her wedding.
Alice was a truly gifted individual and was a vital asset to the Cullens. She used her sight to help others, like preventing Edward’s death and the final fight against the Volturi. Fans have always loved her uniqueness and positive attitude, and her presence is a true gift in the films.
