Twin Peaks: The Return.

Rumors have cropped up in the years since The Return aired that Lynch plans to go back to Twin Peaks, but for his part, Dale Cooper actor MacLachlan doesn’t think Lynch or anyone else should ever stage another reboot. MacLachlan thinks that, in general, too many older TV shows and movies are remade. Check out his remarks below (via Deadline):

“I don’t think I’d want to see that and I don’t think anyone should attempt it. You are like, ‘Don’t touch that,’ but they do, they can’t help but put their hand on the stove again. That is the problem.”

Twin Peaks Season 4 Could Still Happen, But Probably Won’t

MacLachlan may be eager to slam the door on Twin Peaks season 4 ever happening, but not everyone involved in the show has been so quick to shoot down the idea. Series co-creator Mark Frost got the ball rolling back in 2017, telling IndieWire that both he and Showtime were “looking at” the idea of more Twin Peaks. Lynch gave even more hope to fans when, in 2018, he proclaimed in a Q&A that continuing the story beyond season 3 was “calling.”

Those statements were made in the afterglow of Twin Peaks: The Return’s acclaimed Showtime run, but the rumor fires have died down significantly in the years since. Lynch himself was at one time rumored to be working on a mystery project called Wisteria, speculated to be a Twin Peaks return, but nothing has materialized. MacLachlan’s latest statements certainly don’t mean that Twin Peaks is gone forever, but they do not raise hopes either.

Twin Peaks: The Return is available to watch on Paramount+

MacLachlan’s lack of enthusiasm over the prospect of another Twin Peaks reboot may be bad news to fans hoping for more. On the other hand, Twin Peaks: The Return did offer a fittingly cryptic ending to the series, and it might be best to do as MacLachlan says and leave it where it was left, with Cooper and Carrie Page seemingly stranded in an endless nightmare, with many questions left tantalizingly unanswered.

Conceived by Mark Frost and David Lynch in 1990, Twin Peaks is a supernatural mystery-drama series that brings FBI Agent Dale Cooper to the quiet town of Twin Peaks to investigate the murder of a young woman named Laura Palmer. As Dale continues his investigation of her death, he learns that Laura's life wasn't as she d it, and the town itself is hiding far more secrets than they let on. The show received a revival for a third and final season two decades later to resolve the cliffhanger left at the end of the second season.
