Warning: Contains spoilers for Ultimate Wolverine #1!
Marvel’s new Wolverine in all its bloody glory, and his new codename officially marks the most brutal and unforgivable version of the character ever. Though it was already revealed that the rugged X-Men icon is this universe’s Winter Soldier, the events of his debut issue solidify that he could be the most dangerous and deadly version of the character seen yet.
Ultimate Wolverine #1 – written by Chris Condon, with art by Alessandro Cappuccio – offers a bit of backstory for this diabolical new take on the brainwashed super-assassin. Going feral in his first mission, the Wolverine and Winter Soldier hybrid embarks on a violent rampage that will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to seek redemption after.
Ordered by Directorate X, the Ultimate Wolverine murders Mystique and Nightcrawler in the very first issue of his new series. After killing off two fan-favorites in his first major appearance, Ultimate Winter Soldier might officially be the most reprehensible version of Logan in any timeline.
The Ultimate Universe’s Wolverine Officially Becomes The Winter Soldier, And His New Series Already Pushed Him Past The "Point Of No Return"
Ultimate Wolverine #1 – Written By Chris Condon; Art By Alessandro Cappuccio; Color By Bryan Valenza; Lettering By VC’s Cory Petit
Though the Winter Soldier is known for his redemption arc in Marvel Comics, Wolverine’s incarnation of the assassin in the Ultimate Universe commits heinous acts of violence against his own people, making him totally irredeemable. To be fair, he’s not doing this of his own volition, with his memory wiped and free will overrided by Directorate X. However, once Winter Soldier slaughters two mutants of the Opposition, including one who’s clearly a dear friend, it’s hard to imagine that he could even forgive himself for the massacre that unfolds in Ultimate Wolverine #1, if he ever snaps out of it.

Ultimate Wolverine is Officially Revealed (Replacing Bucky as Marvel's New Winter Soldier?)
The official reveal of the new Ultimate Wolverine has arrived, unleashing a new, wild design for the X-Man in Marvel's bold new Ultimate Universe.
This version of Wolverine is a patch job, made from pieces of other dead soldiers, but Nightcrawler is able to see his friend Logan through the living weapon he’s become. For that reason, Kurt’s death is the most heartbreaking part of Ultimate Wolverine #1, hammered home by his heartfelt prayer for Logan displayed on the final page. When the Winter Soldier slices through his friend from a former life with seemingly no remorse, it shows how far gone the real Logan is, and proves that he’s now been turned into the universe’s most terrifying and ruthless killer.
Winter Soldier & Wolverine Rank Among Marvel’s Deadliest Characters, But Neither Compares To The New Ultimate Variant
Ultimate Wolverine Begins With A Bloodbath, & Could Still Get Worse
Especially during his own era of Russian brainwashing, the Winter Soldier was known as one of the most lethal super-spies in the Marvel Universe, so it should come as no surprise that the Ultimate Universe’s take on the character is even more deadly. With the Maker’s Council dominating the universe, with villains ruling the world, they have managed to create the most extreme version of the Winter Soldier that Marvel Comics has ever seen. In main continuity, the Winter Soldier and Wolverine are both formidable fighters, but Earth-6160 sees a combined version totally unleashed and on a targeted destructive rampage.

Marvel's New Winter Soldier Is On a Mission, And We Now Know Who His First Targets Are
Marvel is introducing two new (and iconic) characters to the Ultimate Universe - but time will only tell if they actually survive a Wolverine attack.
With no version of Bucky Barnes to be spoken of in this universe, he’s officially been replaced by this new version of Wolverine, who proves to be the ultimate killing machine. Ultimate Wolverine #1 only offers the first glimpse of the ultra-violent havoc that this version of the X-Men hero can wreak, and it appears that things could get even more bloody while he’s under the control of Directorate X. The standard brainwashing that Bucky received isn’t the only thing clouding Logan’s mind here, as the villains tease that they also possess a secret telepath that could force his actions.
The Ultimate Universe’s Logan Should Be More Brutal And Brooding Than Ever
After Murdering His Friends, Can Wolverine Be Forgiven?
With the violent display in his first mission, this version of earn trust from Mystique and Nightcrawler’s allies in the universe and their fans reading the series.
Even though he’s under mind control now, killing two X-Man favorites might make Ultimate Logan beyond redemption, even when he does eventually regain his senses.
Many different versions of Wolverine throughout Marvel history have unleashed their fair share of violence in other comics, but the bloodbath in Ultimate Wolverine #1 is seriously heart-wrenching, and scary since he’s only just getting started. Even though he’s under mind control now, killing two X-Man favorites might make Ultimate Logan beyond redemption, even when he does eventually regain his senses. As the Ultimate Universe finds its version of Wolverine officially named as its new Winter Soldier, he earns all the terror associated with the title in his vicious debut.
Ultimate Wolverine #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
