Summary

  • Diego Hargreeves' power is a unique telekinetic ability that allows him to curve the trajectory of objects, including knives and bullets.
  • Diego's powers have become more clear-cut since The Umbrella Academy season 2.
  • While Diego's abilities are useful, he still ranks below Klaus and Viktor in of power.

Amid The Umbrella Academy season 4's debut, viewers are wondering more about what, exactly, Diego Hargreeves' (David Castañeda) powers are — and how the character's abilities stack up. Created by Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeves, seven adopted siblings who were not only all born on the same day but gifted (or cursed) with superhuman abilities. Some characters boast pretty straight-forward powers: Luther (Tom Hopper) has super-strength; Five (Aidan Gallagher) can jump through time and space; and Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) can control minds and bend realities. However, other powers, like Diego's, are more nebulous.

After the Hargreeves' first outing, Klaus (Robert Sheehan), who can communicate with the dead, seems to have more complex and expansive powers, while Viktor (Elliot Page), who can convert sound waves into physical force, never even knew about his abilities as a while growing up. Initially, Diego is all about knives, which he throws with perfect accuracy, though that shifts by Umbrella Academy characters' powers, Diego's aren't so clear-cut.

Diego's Umbrella Academy Power Explained

Umbrella Number Two Boasts A Very Specific Telekinetic Ability

In the source material, Diego is known as “The Kraken” for his ability to hold his breath indefinitely. Netflix's adaptation of The Umbrella Academy differs from the comics by only retaining the aspects of Diego's powers that are not only more visually interesting but capable of facilitating thrilling action sequences. Notably, Diego boasts a mild telekinetic ability, which allows him to curve the trajectory of moving objects, including knives. It's this element of his power that ensures Diego almost never misses when throwing his weapon of choice, but it also allows him to manipulate the arc of other objects.

Of course, this doesn't mean Diego is invulnerable.

Essentially, Diego curves the trajectory of either anything he throws or anything that's sent his way by foes. In Umbrella Academy's changes to Diego definitely improved his standing.

The Umbrella Academy is based on the comic book of the same name created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá.
