The main characters in Netflix has seen the rise of many TV shows that have become some of the platform’s most successful titles, and among those is The Umbrella Academy. Created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy is a series of comic books that made the jump to the world of streaming in 2019, and each season has left the audience with a massive cliffhanger and lots of unanswered questions.

The Umbrella Academy introduced the audience to the Hargreeves, seven adopted siblings who along with other 36 children around the world were born under the same mysterious circumstances. These seven kids were adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who trained them as they developed superpowers and formed the superhero team “The Umbrella Academy”. However, Reginald wasn’t a good father and never even tried to connect with his children, and he avoided bonding with them so much that he didn’t even give them names, and instead, he assigned them numbers. The Umbrella Academy’s number 1 is Luther (Tom Hopper), who serves as the team’s leader, and as such, he was the only one who stayed loyal to Reginald after the team split up.

Luther started as the most disliked character in The Umbrella Academy, but the events in seasons 2 and 3 have had a significant impact on him and he has changed a lot and for the better, and season 3 finally made him not only a much more likable character but also an actual leader, proving why he’s The Umbrella Academy’s number 1.

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Made Luther So Much Better

When viewers met Luther in The Umbrella Academy season 1, he was the only member of the team who was still working for his father, and he was blindly loyal to him until he learned that Reginald never read his reports from the moon. Luther became the most unpopular Umbrella Academy member due to his resistance to accept the truth, his condescending attitude toward his siblings, and how he treated Viktor, which was seen by many as key in triggering the apocalypse – basically, Luther didn’t exactly act as the team’s Number 1. The Umbrella Academy season 2 saw the team scattered through Dallas in the 1960s, with Five (Aidan Gallagher) being the one who brought the team back together, but season 3 finally proved why Luther is still Number 1 and made him a lot more likable.

Luther was not only the one who kept the team together throughout the new apocalypse and the rivalry with the Sparrow Academy, but he also served as a link between both teams thanks to his romance with Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez). While the rest of the team dealt with the kugelblitz, Harlan, their own struggles (as happened with Allison), and even Reginald, Luther was the one who guided the team towards what would have been the less bad choice not only for the Umbrellas but the surviving Sparrows as well: accept and embrace the apocalypse. Unfortunately, his actions led to his murder at the hands of Reginald, but that only cemented his place as Number 1, and he’s now also the team’s best guy. With the Umbrellas and Sparrows now powerless and Sloane nowhere to be found, The Umbrella Academy season 4 will surely continue exploring Luther’s development, and it’s to be seen if he will keep proving his place as his team's leader or if he will have a drastic change, as Allison did.
