Sony may have just provided a brief glimpse of the next Uncharted game in its latest PlayStation 5 promotional video - and it might be starring a new heroine. Former Crash Bandicoot developer Naughty Dog introduced players to the wise-cracking treasure hunter Nathan Drake in 2007’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, which quickly became a must-have PS3 exclusive thanks to its high-octane, ruin-exploring gameplay and brilliant writing. Three more mainline Uncharted titles would be released since then, as well as a handful of spin-offs and even a live-action film.
Sony recently released a new ment for the PlayStation 5 on the official release in 2023, including Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
A stream of images soon follows, including an unidentified woman looking for a mysterious box in a dark cave. This hasn’t been connected to any official PlayStation title, but the character blowing dust off an ancient relic in an ment for the console's exclusives heavily implies a connection to Uncharted.
Naughty Dog Likely Isn't Developing A New Uncharted Game
2016’s Uncharted: A Thief’s End was billed as the finale of Nathan Drake’s treasure-seeking escapades, and even ended with him settling down into a quiet life with his long-time love interest Elena Fisher. Naughty Dog has since shifted its focus toward The Last Of Us, and co-president Neil Druckmann recently stated that his studio is “moving on” from the Uncharted series in a recent interview. However, while the studio that started it all may not be interested in a new Uncharted adventure there have been rumors that Sony is moving forward with a new Uncharted game from a new developer.
Uncharted 5 Could Star A New Protagonist
Based on how Uncharted 4 ended, the unnamed, blonde woman shown in the latest PS5 trailer could be Cassie Drake, the daughter of Nathan Drake and Elena Fisher that was revealed at the very end of the game. Players briefly took control of a young Cassie as she explored her family’s seaside home in the game’s epilogue, and discovered the truth about what her parents used to do before she was born. Cassie is still a teenager during this moment, so if the woman in the PS5 trailer is indeed meant to be her, then Uncharted 5 will most likely take place several years after the events of A Thief's End.
It has been suggested that the next Uncharted game could be a reboot of the series, but a more likely outcome could be that the newest installment will instead see an older Cassie Drake carrying out her family’s legacy as a treasure hunter. Sony’s latest PS5 ad doesn’t quite confirm that a new Uncharted game is on the way, but the brief scene of a woman looking suspiciously like Cassie exploring a tomb could be a sign of exciting things to come for fans of Nathan Drake and his many adrenaline-packed, globe-trotting adventures.
