The NBA films about basketball – from The Air Up There and White Men Can’t Jump to Space Jam and its sequel, Space Jam: A New Legacy. It’s also why the Pepsi corporation turned its attention to basketball when crafting a marketing campaign for Pepsi Max in 2012.

In 2012, Pepsi teamed up with NBA talent Kyrie Irving to make a promotional short advertising its Pepsi Max drink. This saw the then Cleveland Cavaliers point guard don prosthetic makeup to play the part of Uncle Drew – a surprisingly nimble septuagenarian who wows several young athletes with his crazy basketball prowess on the court. The Pepsi Max “Uncle Drew” campaign proved to be a massive success and went on to rank as the second most-watched advert on YouTube during the year of its release.

The original “Uncle Drew” advert was such a hit that Pepsi went on to produce three more promotional shorts featuring both Kyrie Irving’s character and a whole host of fellow basketball players – including Kevin Lowe, Maya Moore, and Baron Davis – who were also made up to look like senior citizens to hilariously dupe a load of people who assumed they were too old to slam dunk. Basketball fans can watch all four of the “Uncle Drew” shorts together for free on YouTube.
