Warning: Contains spoilers for Undead Unluck's season finale.

Summary

  • Undead Unluck season 1 ends with Fuuko and Andy teaming up with Rip and Latla to defeat Autumn.
  • Anno Un's sacrifice saved the day, but it's clear that he won't be forgotten.
  • The finale sets up potential plot points for a second season thanks to UMAs that need to be dealt with and Union needing further development.

After six months of weekly airings, Undead Unluck season 1 has finally come to an end. There were plenty of high and low moments in the show from start to finish, most of them involving the quality of the animation, but the story, itself, never failed to be its biggest highlight.

Undead Unluck revolves around Negators, people with the power to negate the various rules of reality, taking on quests to build up power for a final confrontation against God before He initiates Ragnarok.

Autumn in Phase 2

The final quest of Undead Unluck season 1 as depicted in episode #24 saw protagonists Fuuko and Andy fighting against UMA Autumn, but it was quickly shown that they weren’t strong enough to deal with it. As such, the mysterious Unknown Negator Anno Un sent Fuuko’s soul inside of Andy’s memories so they could learn more about each other and themselves, thus increasing the skill with which they used their powers.

Undead Unluck Episode 23 Autumn roaring with its mouth agape.

After Fuuko and Andy finished their impromptu training session, they returned to reality to find Anno being attacked by the Under Negators Rip, Latla, and a new Negator named Bunny. Andy, with help from Anno, saved Fuuko from being killed by Unseen, which would have eventually led to everyone’s defeat at the hands of God, and the two groups continued fighting from there. As they fought, however, Latla informed everyone that Autumn was heading towards them, and after some prodding from Fuuko and Anno, Andy, Fuuko, and Under put their fight on hold to work together to defeat Autumn.

Undead Unluck Says Goodbye To Its Most Tragic Figure

A farewell to Unknown

Anno in the finale

Thanks to his increased understanding of Undead, Andy became strong enough to damage Autumn, but its regeneration was too powerful to deal with. Similarly, Rip’s younger body made him too weak to hurt Autumn and use Unrepair, so the two of them were left without any way of efficiently dealing with Autumn. Recognizing this, Anno asked everyone to hold off Autumn while he drew the strongest artifact he could; during that time, Anno reflected on his life up to that point, and it was revealed that Anno was a clone Akira Kuno created to work around Unknown.

The artifact Anno created was the same one that was used to save Rip’s life earlier in the season, an artifact that can increase or decrease a person’s age. Anno used the artifact to age Rip back into an adult, but the consequence of using the artifact is aging ten times however much the target aged. Because of that, Anno aged to the point of turning to dust, and since the G-Liner was destroyed in the process, Akira Kuno permanently lost any means of interacting with people.

Undead Unluck Finally Has Rip Work Together With The Heroes

The Union & Under finally working together

Rip in the finale

Rip was left confused by Anno’s sacrifice, but Fuuko explained that he did it because he saw all of them as heroes. Rip didn’t want to be a hero, though, because then he wouldn’t have the resolve to steal the Ark and go back in time to stop himself from accidentally killing Latla’s sister, Leila, with Unrepair. Even so, as Autumn entered phase 2, Rip, ing how Leila would have wanted him to be a hero, combined his power with Andy’s to fully hit Autumn with Unrepair, and the two began to work in earnest to fight Autumn.

Undead Unluck Shows That Anno Un Will Never Be Forgotten

Unknown is the show's biggest hero

With Andy and Rip now working together in earnest, they were able to inflict serious damage on Autumn while Latla’s powers protected them from harm. At one point, Andy and Rip cut a hole in Autumn’s body straight to its core, and from there, Andy, having been imbued with Unluck from Fuuko, used Anno’s Volcano Unluck Bullet to launch a finger into Autumn’s core. The ensuing wave of Unluck caused a meteor to destroy Autumn’s body, and with that, Fuuko, Latla, and Bunny were able to capture Autumn’s core and finally put an end to the battle.

Throughout all of that, Akira Kuno narrated the events of his life and how important everyone who was gathered there was to him. The narration kept going through Autumn’s defeat, at which point it was revealed that Akira Kuno had been present for everything, even though no one could perceive him due to Unknown. By sheer coincidence, Andy brought out his fist for a fist bump right where Akira was standing, and as Akira cried, he remarked that his efforts to help everyone were the true meaning behind his story, To You, From Me.

Nevertheless, Rip gave Fuuko Autumn’s core as a show of good faith, and he and the rest of Under left on relatively good . After their departure, Fuuko and Andy collapsed in each other’s arms from fatigue and Andy complimented Fuuko for holding out inside his memories for ten years, and the final shot of Undead Unluck season 1 was of Juiz confronting Billy in a snowy environment.

The Biggest Plot Points Undead Unluck Season 2 Needs To Address

What Undead Unluck season 2 needs to cover

Billy in the season 1 finale

Owing to Undead Unluck’s open-ended conclusion, there’s a lot of stuff being set up for a potential second season. The UMAs embodying spring, summer, and winter still have to be dealt with, and considering the snowy environment Juiz and Billy met up in, their confrontation will probably involve UMA Winter, in some way. Naturally, season 2 needs to fully explore Billy’s motives and reasons for betraying Undead Unluck's Union, and if that doesn’t happen in his encounter with Juiz, it will hopefully at least begin there.

Many of the characters in the series also need to be further explored. The remaining of Under are one thing, but most of the Union outside of Fuuko, Andy, and Juiz received very little screen time and development, so season 2 needs to work to flesh those characters out and others for the eventual final battle against God to hold any weight. Those points and others leave a lot to think about at the end of Undead Unluck’s action-packed season 1 finale, and hopefully, the show will be renewed for a second season to properly follow it up.
