Well known comic book series Usagi Yojimbo, created by Stan Sakai, is coming to television for the first time. The CGI animated series titled "Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles" is the product of a collaboration between Netflix and Gaumont. The Usagi Yojimbo comic books, first published in 1987, are set in the Edo period of Japanese history and feature anthropomorphic animals. AlthoughTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, this new series is the first to feature the Usagi Yojimbo universe.
Variety reports the television show will not feature the comic book series' main protagonist, anthropomorphized rabbit Miyamoto Usagi. Instead, the series will follow his descendent, the teenage rabbit Samurai Yuichi, as he strives to become a true samurai. Yuichi will be ed a team of unlikely heroes featuring a host of new characters, including a bounty hunter, a ninja, a pickpocket, and a pet lizard, on his samurai quest.
Creator Stan Sakai will executive produce the new series. Sakai will be ed by a team of executive producers including Gaumont's Nicolas Atlan, Terry Kalagian, Sidonie Dumas, and Christophe Riandee, Dark Horse Entertainment's Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, and Chris Tongue, and Atomic Monster's James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett. Ben Jones will serve as the supervising producer.
Khang Le will be serving as the art director. 88 Pictures, an animated studio based out of Mumbai, will provide the CGI animation to bring Usagi Yojimbo to television at last.
