A building settlements from humble homes to great castles. The procedurally generated world can be explored alone or with up to nine friends online. Valheim is the first project from developer Iron Gate Studio.
Despite still being in early access, Valheim has amassed a huge player base and has an overwhelmingly positive reception on Steam. Since the COVID-19 pandemic made its way to the United States and people began to quarantine, a new game has received a massive boost in popularity every few months, starting with the release of Among Us, which actually released in 2018.
Valheim's open world, meanwhile, offers fans a rather inhospitable environment in which to bond online. The dangers of the realm of Valheim can result in some great feats both of bravery and of pettiness. “My friend died in the Black Forest, so he sent the Greydwarves a message,” posted Reddit Snoo30482 alongside an image of the environmental carnage. The image was posted in the r/Valheim subreddit amassing 35 rewards and almost 400 comments. There are still a handful of trees left standing in the screenshot, but the message to the Greydwarves is a clear one.
The Black Forest is a large biome found in Valheim where many different types of Greydwarves reside. Greydwarves usually travel in groups of two or three and are afraid of fire. They're a considerable threat to players who aren't prepared for them, and a few ill-fated encounters with the creatures is more than enough for players to start planning acts of destruction like the one seen above. The Rune Stones in Valheim describe Greydwarves as soulless skulkers that are born from rain and rot.
Chopping down a massive forest sounds like an act of virtual ecoterrorism, but the message sent to the Greydwarves is loud and clear. The post has been quite popular on Reddit with comments saying that the ’s friend should set up a settlement in the newly cleared forest and one even ends in “genocide complete.” Demolishing the forest may have been an act of revenge, but at least it brought the internet's massive Valheim community a laugh.
