Candice King has been crushing the social media game with her newest podcast and hilarious reels on Instagram, and fans love to see the Caroline Forbes actor living her best life after the final conclusion of The Vampire Diaries Universe. Her character is considered one of the best to emerge from the show and with good reason.
She was generally very well-written and likable, but due to the nature of the sprawling TVD lore, there were some plot holes in her story. If these errors in her arcs had been addressed or paid more attention to by the showrunners, Caroline would have had a near-perfect run on The Vampire Diaries.
Entering Her House As a Vampire
Caroline changed a whole lot from season 1, and the greatest change was her transition into vampirism. However, the rules of property governed where vampires could enter, but they were quite spotty. Caroline should not have been able to enter her house after she first became a vampire since the deed was in her mother's name, but she was able to come and go freely.
A sense of ownership did not determine where vampires could go, since the show depicted people transferring ownership papers to random humans to prevent entry, so Caroline's "spiritual" ownership of her house also did not count.
School & College Life
Being a part of committees and extracurricular activities was a big part of Caroline's life, but it was unclear how she managed her academics with the adversities that supernatural life gave to her.
Caroline was never seen studying or giving exams, and she only arranged one too many dances for the school. Yet, Caroline got itted to Whitmore College without a hitch and even got a drama major degree when she barely ever went to college. Unless she was compelling the staff, it made no sense that Caroline got anywhere in her academic life.
Damon & Caroline's Telepathy
Damon's powers in season 1 were a lot more varied than they were later, and the showrunners mysteriously phased out his other talents as the show progressed.
When he was feeding on Caroline, she developed a telepathic connection through which she was able to connect to him and free him from captivity. This was a one-off superpower that Caroline was roped into, like several other Damon-related jams that she was stuck in as a human. Caroline's character in the Vampire Diaries. was used as Damon's lackey through a power that was never explained or used later on in TVD.
Liz Not Putting Caroline On Vervain
Since Caroline was so vulnerable as a human, many fans couldn't help but wonder why her mother, who was practically a founding family member, didn't put her on vervain when she knew that vampires were prowling around the town.
It was a major plot hole that Caroline's mother protected everyone but her own daughter. In any situation, Liz would have safeguarded Caroline over everyone else, but this was forgotten in the show, which had adverse consequences on the teen.
Not Addressing Damon's Abuse
A big part of Caroline's arc was her horrible experience with Damon, where she was possibly sexually assaulted and compelled to go against her friends to do his bidding.
The writers made a big error in skipping all the trauma she went through and brushing her abuse under the rug to keep the plot going. Elena and Caroline were supposed to have the best friendship, but Elena completely ignored what Damon had put Caroline through. She chose him as her partner, knowing what her best friend had endured with him, and this was out of character for both the girls. They were too caring to neglect these events, but the show glossed right over them.
Making Caroline Turn Her Humanity Back On
Caroline was probably the most disciplined vampire to ever exist, and even when she turned her humanity off, she was not in the mood to kill or hurt people. She was using the switch just to not feel her deep grief, and all would have been well if Elena and company had just left her alone.
Since she was doing no harm, there was no reason for them to nag her to turn her humanity back on. If they hadn't provoked her, she would have stayed in her lane and turned it back on when she felt ready, instead of spiraling and killing people like she ended up doing.
Getting Pregnant
Vampire fertility was a topic that was sealed and final on TVD, but Caroline's surprise magical pregnancy retconned all of it and created a huge plot hole.
There was no way she should have been able to nurture a single baby, let alone magical twins, but Candice King's pregnancy was accommodated by creating this plot anomaly. No other vampire could get pregnant on the show, and Caroline would have died had it not been for her plot armor, delivering siphoning witch babies. The entire plot was nonsensical.
No Relatives At Her Mother's Funeral
Losing Liz dealt Caroline a huge blow, and while it was common knowledge that Liz was a single mom and that Bill was dead, it was strange that there were no other adult relatives of hers who showed up to the now-orphaned Caroline.
She was alone during the entire funeral, and when she returned home. The seats were filled, but there was a noticeable lack of familial for Caroline who was just in college at that point. It was very odd that not even one family member stepped out from the woodwork to her.
Broken Compulsions
Poor Caroline was stuck doing the dirty work of recompelling humans whom Stefan had hoodwinked and made a fool of during his entire life after he turned human, and his compulsions faded away. Except, he was the only one with whom this weird phenomenon happened.
No other vampire faced broken compulsions with death or the return to human state, and only Caroline had to do damage control for Stefan. It also seems impossible that she could have covered recompelling every single person who turned up to complain against the younger Salvatore.
The Wedding
While the idea of the June wedding was poetic with the vast foreshadowing, it made absolutely no sense at all. Everything about it seemed forced, especially with the impending doom that awaited Mystic Falls. Stefan's willingness to sacrifice himself after being newly married made it even stranger.
Caroline also just accepted the death of her husband on the day they were wed with barely any discussion, which was very out of character for her. It seemed as though the wedding was only formulated to add some drama to the show because its timing and Caroline and Stefan's behavior did not add up at all.
