Enzo was one of the unluckiest characters in The Vampire Diaries when considering the pain he went through for his minimal victories. While being a vampire made him a killer and difficult person to stand sometimes, the better part of him was loyal and resilient. Enzo was the best friend Damon ever had, and his love for Bonnie was pure.
Enzo never ran away from a fight and never gave up on a mission, which made him a divisive character depending on his character at the moment. It was also easy to understand him and predict his next line of action, as he always spoke his mind, as seen here in his best quotes.
"Live Your Life Bonnie Bennet. All Of It. Promise Me."
We Are Planning A June Wedding (S08E15)
After being turned into a vampire by Lily, being tortured for 70 years by the Augustines and then getting left behind by Damon, Enzo had every right to hate the world. But he still found a place for love in his heart, making him one of the most romantic and heroic characters in The Vampire Diaries.
His relationship with Bonnie wasn't expected because the two of them were so different and Enzo wasn't fond of witches. He was always selfless, even after he died, telling Bonnie to go on and travel the world and live her full life. He even told Bonnie to forgive Stefan for killing him, which shows just how selfless he was.
"You've Got Me All Wrong, Caroline Forbes. I'm Not Judging You. I'm Preparing You."
Rescue Me (S05E17)
Enzo was resourceful, having been a vampire for many years and a soldier before that, which is why the Mystic Falls Gang needed him. He was a difficult teacher though, as it was hard to tell whether he was onishing or teaching. His dark humor and frequent jabs at people made him likable, but he took it a little too far sometimes.
He was easily misunderstood to be an angry person with a tendency to start arguments, even when he only meant to be nice. But if anyone was new to vampirism and needed guidance, Enzo was the best teacher, as he proved with Caroline. He was good at judging character and could tell a person with hidden intention from afar, which made him a great wingman.
"I'm Not Leaving You. I'm The Only Friend You Have Left."
No Exit (S05E14)
It was true, Damon needed a friend at the time and Enzo was the best friend one could have at such a time because his loyalty was limitless. As far as he was concerned, a good person didn't stop being good just because they did something bad.
He helped Damon throughout the time he was captured by the Augustines. When he tracked him to Mystic Falls, he let the past slide and saved Damon's life multiple times. He stayed even when Stefan and the rest of the group didn't want him around because he really cared for Damon, Lily, and later, Bonnie.
"Never Let Go Of A Good Vendetta, And This One Is Just Getting Started."
Man On Fire (S05E19)
Enzo was one person whose bad side no one wanted to be on because he won't forget. He took vendettas to a whole new level. He would make it his life's mission to make his enemies suffer, as he did with Stefan. He also tried to trick Sarah into coming to Mystic Falls using Matt as his pawn just to get back at Stefan.
When he decided to go against the Travelers, he didn't stop until they were defeated. He did the same with the last surviving descendant of Dr. Whitmore in revenge, nearly a century after his real enemy had died. Damon tried to put the brakes on Enzo to tame the destruction, but Forgiving wasn't in Enzo's vocabulary.
"When Did Stefan's Com Become The True North?"
The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get (S06E06)
Stefan and Enzo were one of the worst enemies in The Vampire Diaries, always finding a reason to fight, even when they were on the same side. While Enzo was on the wrong side of events in most cases, his distrust for Stefan was justified considering where Enzo was coming from.
Everyone else looked at Stefan as some sort of saint who got everything right, but not Enzo. While he was wrong to hate Stefan so much, he was right about Stefan's hypocrisy because he had done lots of bad things too. Enzo was also jealous of Stefan, as everyone including Damon seemed to like him and look up to him.
"I Have The Antidote, Tough From The Looks Of It, You'd Both Rather Be Dead."
While You Were Sleeping (S05E16)
And he was right because Elena and Damon looked horrible after being possessed by the Travelers, but he ends up helping them as he always did.
This was just another instance of dark humor from Enzo, which was the best part of him. He knew how to bring some fun into a dark situation because he had been through so much pain, and he understood the need for staying positive. Even when they were trapped in the Augustine cells with Damon, Enzo was the only one who brought some cheer despite being tortured every day.
"What Kind Of Coward Gives Up On His Brother?"
Yellow Ledbetter (S06E02)
This time, Stefan was the subject of Enzo's jabs, as Enzo tried to make him feel guilty for abandoning Damon in the Augustine cells. As far as Enzo was concerned, a man that abandoned a brother could never be trusted. Stefan had not done enough to rescue Damon from the Augustines, which was unfair because the torture in those cells was extreme, and it left Damon broken.
Enzo believed that loyalty, especially to your brother, was not negotiable. He never trusted Stefan because he saw him as an evil person that would rather play righteous than do the right thing. Enzo believed that brothers had to stick together in all situations.
"You See, That's The Thing About Threats: If There's No Follow-Through, No One Takes You Seriously."
Total Eclipse Of The Heart (S05E13)
Jeremy was the subject of Enzo's threats during one of Enzo's darkest moments in the show. He held Jeremy hostage on Damon’s behalf as they tried to force Bonnie and Liv to use the locator spell and find Wes.
Enzo wasn't one to give empty threats, especially when he was on a revenge mission, and on this occasion, he nearly killed Jeremy. His rigidity made him a difficult person to negotiate with and sometimes, he became totally unreasonable.
"I Plan On Pestering All Of You Until I'm Safely Returned To The Land Of The Living."
Promised Land (S05E21)
Even in death, Enzo kept fighting to save his world from destruction, which shows what a determined soldier he was. The collapse of The Other Side was one of the most catastrophic events in The Vampire Diaries and everything would have been worse if Enzo didn't sound the alarm when he did. Enzo could easily have been sucked into oblivion as would the rest of the people in the dimension which would have been a sad ending.
He had reached what most people would consider the end, but he kept fighting, calling on Bonnie, Damon, and even Elena to get their attention to the predicament of the dimension. He never gave up on anything, even when things looked hopeless.
"He's Right. I Like Poetic Justice."
What Lies Beneath (S05E20)
Simply getting justice was never good enough for Enzo, it had to be poetic. He enjoyed Damon's decision to leave only one of Dr. Whitmore's descendants alive from each generation just to elongate their suffering for what the doctor had done to them.
He tried the same thing with Stefan when he used Sarah as his way of getting back at him, but it didn't go so well. He would go to any length to avenge those he loved and never stopped following what he thought was right.
