The Vampire Diaries was once a part of an expansive universe; but now that the second spinoff has been canceled, the best hope for the franchise is a spinoff about Bonnie and the Bennett witches. This would be the most interesting way to keep audiences attached to the world ofThe Vampire Diaries. Plus, the character of Bonnie Bennett deserves some redemption for the way she was mistreated in the original series.

Starting back in 2009, The Vampire Diaries introduced the Legacies including witches a considerable amount, they were never the focus like vampires and werewolves. A new series focusing on witches would be a refreshing addition to the TVD universe. Such a show would resolve many loose strings within the Bennett storyline.

The Vampire Diaries successfully showcased supernatural creatures like vampires and werewolves throughout its run. Arguably though, the most important supernatural beings, witches, were never explored as fully as they should have been in the original show. The two spinoff series, The Originals and Legacies, also never received the acclaim of their predecessor, so the universe is, for now, at an end. However, this can be prevented with a new series focused on TVD’s most shortchanged person, Bonnie Bennett, and her magical lineage.

Why Vampire Diaries' Witches Need To Be Explored

Simply put, The Vampire Diaries never gave witches their proper due. The origins of vampires and immortality had that advantage, but not as much is known about the origins of witchcraft in the TVD universe. Qestiyah is the earliest known witch and presumably the first matriarch of the Bennett bloodline. The source of her powers, however, is not explored whatsoever. Despite the Bennett women being descendants of The Travelers, there is little understanding of what that truly means. It’s been vaguely explained that the witches use ancestral magic, as Bonnie frequently references “The Spirits” on the Other Side throughout her magical journey. Other than that, the witches are simply creatures of speculation.

Without this spinoff, The Vampire Diaries universe may never reclaim the charm of the original series. It’s likely, in fact, that the universe may not have any more series to add to the bunch. With Legacies only ending this year, there is lots of time for the creators to revive the love the audience once had for Mystic Falls. One can only hope that the Bennett witches get the attention they deserve.
