Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Dragon Ball Super chapter 103! Vegeta and Bulma are an iconic couple in Dragon Ball canon, as the two have been together practically since Vegeta decided to live on Earth following the Frieza Saga, and they have two children together, Trunks and Bulla. However, a darkness to their relationship lurks under the surface, something Vegeta alludes to in the latest chapter of Dragon Ball Super.
In Dragon Ball Super chapter 103 by Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou, Goku and Vegeta are training on Beerus’ planet with Gohan, gauging the strength of Ultra Instinct Goku vs Gohan Beast, Gohan Beast vs Broly, and even an all-out brawl between all the Saiyans at once.
When the fighting ends, everyone decides that it’s time to return home to Earth, as Goku and Vegeta have been away for quite some time, and Gohan wants to get home in time to pick Pan up from school. And right as they’re deciding to leave, Vegeta says something fairly peculiar: “Bulma may lose interest if I’m gone too long”. But, as strange and off-handed as this comment was, Vegeta isn’t without his reasons for making it.
Bulma Has Proven She’ll Dump Someone Uncommitted to Their Relationship in Dragon Ball
Before Vegeta and Bulma began their relationship, Bulma was dating Yamsha for quite some time. But, when it became clear that Yamsha wasn’t committed to his relationship with Bulma, she dumped him and pursued Vegeta. However, at this point in Dragon Ball canon, Vegeta has been off-world for some time, and so soon after Bulma gave birth to their daughter, Bulla. If he were to stay gone much longer, that could give Bulma the impression that he was no longer committed to their marriage.
Vegeta has already seen first-hand how little tolerance Bulma has for an absent romantic partner, and he knows that he could lose her the same way Yamcha did. Sure, their relationship is a bit more serious than the one Bulma had with Yamcha, but Bulma is fiercely independent and is extremely confident in her own self-worth. So, if it seems like Vegeta doesn’t want to be in her life, then she’ll have no problem cutting him out of it - and Vegeta knows it.
Vegeta Has a Healthy Fear of Bulma (as He Should)
Not only will Bulma leave Vegeta if he doesn’t give her the love and attention she deserves as his wife, but he also has a healthy fear of Bulma - as he should. Regardless of transformations or power levels, Bulma is perhaps the most terrifying Z-Fighter in Dragon Ball. She’s immeasurably brilliant, exorbitantly wealthy, and has unlimited access to the Dragon Balls of Earth. It doesn’t matter how strong Vegeta gets, if Bulma wanted to make his life a living hell, she absolutely could - and that’s probably what Vegeta loves about her the most.
While the nature of their relationship is probably the only one Vegeta (and Bulma) would be truly happy in - as both of them are equal parts aggressive and insane, whose craziness perfectly matches the other’s - it is ittedly dark if it is true that their marriage could end if Bulma were to “lose interest” in Vegeta. However, it seems like Vegeta is fully aware of what’s expected of him as Bulma’s husband, and while he will always go off to train or battle cosmically powerful foes, Vegeta makes sure to always make time for his Bulma.
