The character of Venom is about to get his very own horror-themed series called Venom: Black, White and Blood. The Black, White, and Blood title has been attributed to several Marvel-housed characters over the years as a means of presenting a more violent, R-rated take on classic heroes and villains, even scarier than the Venom movie trilogy. More recently, Marvel announced such an anthology series for the Predator franchise.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Marvel will be launching Venom: Black, White & Blood #1 (the first of four issues) on August 20. The first issue is written by Davie Michelinie, J.M. DeMatteis, and Ryan North with art by Jonas Scharf, Dave Wachter, and Creees Lee. Below, readers can find cover art and variants from Greg Capullo, Mark Bagley, Peach Momoko, and Doaly.

The series will offer a collection of stories from Venom's history, including J.M. DeMatteis and Dave Wachter's "Fathers and Sons," taking place after Macimum Carnage.

Interestingly enough, Marvel's comics have seldom placed Venom in an outright horror story. More often than not, the symbiote frequently placed directly into the horror genre is Carnage, which makes sense given Cletus Kasady's history as a serial killer. Carnage was made for the horror genre, but many would say the same about Venom. Venom always deserved the horror treatment, but it's rare to find the beast featured within the actual horror genre, even if he is a scary individual.

Both onscreen and on-, Venom has terrified audiences, particularly thanks to his trilogy of Tom Hardy-led movies. That being said, Marvel has been criticized for forgetting what makes Venom scary. What makes him most scary has been hard to translate onscreen when all three movies in the trilogy are rated PG-13. Working within the parameters of censorship, Sony could only portray so much of the behemoth's onslaught of terror without needing to hold back for younger audiences.

Whereas the movies are limited in how violently they can depict Venom, the comics will have no parameters to speak of. If this comic series follows the trend of past Black, White and Blood series, the four-part comic is bound to depict Venom at his most violent with little to no censors. On paper, Venom can be total nightmare fuel, but he can't be truly seen as nightmarish outside the horror genre, not when most of his stories are more action-driven than anything else. Finally, these new comics get to showcase Venom as scary as the movies should've made him.

Venom: Black, White, and Blood #1 goes on sale from Marvel on August 20.

The Venom franchise is a series of superhero films based on the Marvel Comics character Venom, produced by Sony Pictures as part of their Spider-Man Universe. The franchise began with the 2018 film Venom, which tells the story of Eddie Brock, a journalist who becomes the host for an alien symbiote, giving him superhuman abilities. Despite mixed reviews, the film was a commercial success, leading to a sequel and further expansion of the franchise.
