In a wild new upgrade, the villainous symbiote Venom truly emerge as a standalone character - no longer an antihero ing character in Spider-Man's adventures, but a complex protagonist with his own sprawling lore, ing cast, and godlike villains. However, even in that context, no-one expected the immense upgrade Marvel just gave the Lethal Protector.

Venom Harnesses the Power of Godzilla

The Symbiote Is Marvel's New King of the Monsters

venom gets a godzilla upgrade as godvenom

In the recently released Godzilla vs Spider-Man - by Joe Kelly, Nick Bradshaw, Rachelle Rosenberg and Joe Caramagna - Spidey is swinging through New York when the King of Monsters attacks. Spider-Man's black symbiote costume ends up bonding with Godzilla, creating a kaiju-sized symbiote that Spider-Man and Godzilla work together to defeat. However, after the symbiote is defeated, it escapes, bonding with classic host Eddie Brock to become the terrifying Godvenom.

Currently, Marvel is publishing a series of specials where Godzilla takes on iconic heroes including Hulk and the Fantastic Four. In each story, Godzilla is given an upgrade from a power source that only exists in the Marvel Universe. Up against Spider-Man, it makes sense that Godzilla would get its own symbiote, becoming one of the most powerful hosts to ever get the 'Venomized' treatment.

A Nuclear-Powered Symbiote Is No Joke

Venomized Godzilla extends its tongue.

However, as cool as it is to see Godzilla as a symbiote, the real development is the birth of Godvenom. The Venom symbiote has often retained the powers of former hosts, and that's what happens after it leaves Godzilla, recreating the kaiju's iconic dorsal spines and - presumably - the atomic breath that Godzilla channels through them. Since Eddie Brock doesn't recognize Venom, it seems this story exists in its own continuity, meaning that anything could happen next with Godvenom. Alongside its new spines, the new Godvenom has a terrifying extended maw and a new symbol on its chest - a combination of its iconic spider and the logo that appears on Godzilla's chest when it's briefly host to Godzilla.

In a scary addition, bonding with the Venom symbiote connects Godzilla to the King in Black - the ancient God of Symbiotes who is connected to the primordial void of darkness. In Marvel's main continuity, Knull was killed and replaced by Venom. However, in this world it's possible Knull will be able to exert his will through Godvenom, giving the apocalyptic villain his strongest soldier of all time.

Fans will have to wait and see what happens next with Godvenom and this thrilling rewrite of Spider-Man and Venom's rivalry, and many will be desperate to see Eddie Brock unleash his new atomic powers. However, before then, fans get to see Godzilla move on from Venom and take the fight to more Marvel heroes - facing off with the X-Men next in May 14's Godzilla vs X-Men.
