This article contains SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 2, episode 6, and George R. R. Martin's book Fire & Blood.

Summary

  • Vermithor is younger but Vhagar is bigger in House of the Dragon.
  • Vhagar meets her end during the Battle Above the God's Eye in Fire & Blood.
  • Hugh Hammer, who is of Valyrian descent, claims Vermithor but is killed in the Second Battle of Tumbleton.

How powerful Vermithor is compared to Vhagar in House of the Dragon is a question that must take into consideration not only their sizes but also their ages, battle experience, and potential rides. Unlike Game of Thrones, during which dragons were extremely rare and would only show up from time to time, House of the Dragon features several of the Targaryen beasts. Vhagar is arguably the scariest dragon in House of the Dragon, but she is not the only one who can cause a lot of destruction and even beat other dragons in battle.

Although House of the Dragon begins at a time of peace established by King Jaehaerys I and his successor, Viserys I, the show soon enters the period known as the George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

Daemon sings to the dragon Vermithor in House of the Dragon season 1, episode 10, a moment that will have several implications in the show's future.

Vermithor Is One Of Westeros' Biggest Dragons - But Probably Wouldn't Beat Vhagar

Vermithor Is Younger, But Vhagar Is Bigger

Born 34 years after the Conquest, Vermithor is one of the oldest and biggest dragons in House of the Dragon. In of size, he was only behind Balerion and Vhagar. He was claimed by Jaehaerys Targaryen, who would later become king following the death of Maegor I under strange circumstances. Vhagar is the biggest of the living dragons, but that does not mean Vermithor is weaker. He is the second largest of all dragons featured in the show. Vhagar has seen more battles than Vermithor by the events of season 2, which technically gives her an edge.

A 180-year-old Vhagar should be significantly slower and less resistant than a 100-year-old Vermithor.

Vhagar is roughly 30% bigger than Vermithor, which shows how impressive the dragon claimed by Aemond Targaryen is. In a scenario where both would be in their prime around the same age, Vhagar would beat Vermithor relatively easily. However, when considering their different ages, Vhagar would struggle against Vermithor. Visenya Targaryen’s dragon is 180 years old during the events of House of the Dragon, with Vermithor being almost 80 years younger. A 180-year-old Vhagar should be significantly slower and less resistant than a 100-year-old Vermithor.

The biggest dragon in Westeros history was Balerion, Aegon the Conqueror's dragon, who died 94 years after the Conquest.

When it comes to their track record in battle, both Vhagar and Vermithor display impressive stats. As an older dragon who has been in Westeros since the Conquest, Vhagar has seen more battles, including against other dragons. By the time Vermithor s the Dance of the Dragons, Vhagar has already killed Luke Velaryon, Rhaenys Targaryen, and their respective dragons in battle. Vermithor s the war during the Battle in the Gullet, where he helps secure the victory for the Blacks alongside three other dragons. Vermithor also participates in the first and second battles of Tumbleton.

With all of these elements considered, Vhagar would still probably beat Vermithor during the Dance of the Dragons even though the former was no longer in her prime. It would probably come down to how smart their riders were, though, assuming this would be a battle between dragonriders and not just the beast themselves. In a hypothetical encounter between Aemond and Hugh Hammer (Vermithor’s rider during the war), the Targaryen prince would have more experience riding such a large dragon. It would not be an easy fight, though, and the winner would surely be left heavily injured.

What Happens To Vermithor In House Of The Dragon

Vermithor Is Claimed By Hugh Hammer

Vermithor has an interesting path ahead of him in House of the Dragon if the show stays true to his story in the source material, Fire & Blood. Despite Daemon being the one to awaken him, Vermithor finds a different character, who is not any of the lords or princes in House of the Dragon, worthy of being his rider. Many potential dragonseeds attempt to bond with the dragon, yet Vermithor refuses or burns all of them until he finally chooses the bastard son of a blacksmith, Hugh Hammer.

House of the Dragons's Hugh Hammer, who is of Valyrian descent, claims Vermithor and s the Dance of the Dragons on Rhaenyra's side. He fights for the Blacks in the Battle of the Gullet before betraying Rhaenyra in favor of Aegon at the first Battle of Tumbleton. Then he later attempts to claim the throne himself. In the Second Battle of Tumbleton, toward the end of the Targaryen civil war, Hugh is killed before he can reach his dragon. Shortly after, Vermithor, riderless again, engages in battle with two dragons, Seasmoke and Tessarion, and is killed.

Vhagar is technically defeated by Caraxes in Fire & Blood, although Daemon's dragon and his rider die alongside Aemond and his beast. The Battle Above the God’s Eye should be one of the best moments in House of the Dragon based on how it plays out in the book. The rivalry and the tension between Aemond and Daemon have been set up since season 1, particularly after they see each other for the first time in a while. The “second sons” teams Green and Black end up having one of the most crucial battles in the Dance of the Dragons.

At first, Aemond and Criston Cole go to Harrenhal, hoping to kill Daemon and end the war once and for all. However, Daemon was already on his way to King’s Landing. Toward the end of the war, when Daemon and Rhaenyra’s relationship has already fallen apart, the king consort and his dragon fly back to the Riverlands and challenge Aemond. Aemond, who was burning everything on his path for a few days, eventually answers the challenge and meets Daemon for their ultimate battle. Aemond, Vhagar, Daemon, and Caraxes all die during this epic House of the Dragon battle.
