Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) has been tapped to lead her own DC spinoff show on HBO Max, and Peacemaker already set the stage for its story. The DCEU, and the DC universe in general, plays host to some of the most dangerous villains imaginable. The Joker, The Riddler, Darkseid, and more denizens of death haunt the hallowed halls of the franchise. Yet, one of the most cold-hearted and ruthless DC characters is nominally on the side of good: Amanda Waller.
The overseer and commander of Task Force X in unstable people like Harley Quinn and Christopher Smith, a.k.a. Peacemaker, seem to have more of a conscience than Waller, that's a problem waiting to happen.
Surprisingly though, it was Waller's own daughter, Leota Adebayo, who ultimately exposed her bad deeds, revealing to the world at the end of Peacemaker just what her mother's Task Force X had been up to. If it had been anyone else who gave her up, Waller would likely retaliate in violent fashion, but with that probably off the table, Peacemaker's ending has set the perfect table for Waller's spinoff. After Adebayo's press conference, Waller will likely find herself busted down the chain of command, forced to take orders instead of giving them. The Amanda Waller spinoff show will require her to how to work with others, and perhaps maybe help her rediscover her humanity along the way. Either that or she'll just pretend to change while actually scheming her way back to the top.
It's safe to say that most DC devotees don't want to see a massive character switch where Waller turns into a nice, caring person. Her harsh determination and drive to succeed at all costs are what make her a character audiences love to hate, especially as expertly played by Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis. That said, seeing Waller have to work her way back up to top-level status offers an opportunity to shine a spotlight on what exactly makes her tick, and perhaps more fully explain why she ended up the way she did.
The Amanda Waller spinoff show also offers an interesting chance to explore her relationship with Peacemaker standout Leota Adebayo, the only member of Waller's family shown in the DCEU so far. While Waller will definitely feel betrayed at first, if she truly does love her daughter, the possibility is open for a reconciliation between them. Adebayo may never be a fan of her mother's methods, but perhaps she'll learn that sometimes a situation does call for success by absolutely any means necessary, no matter the moral cost. That seems like a lesson Peacemaker would approve of.
