Netflix’s Virgin River is no stranger to dropping huge bombshells at the end of its seasons, and season 4 in particular left several questions that season 5 needs to contend with. Virgin River is originally based on the series of books by Robyn Carr and follows nurse practitioner Melinda “Mel” Monroe, who moves to the titular town for a new start after the death of her husband. Despite Virgin River being painted as a run-of-the-mill small town, the goings-on there are anything but typical, and Mel is swiftly embroiled in several of the town’s dramas and mysteries.
Though many seasons of Netflix’s Virgin River have open-ended finales, season 4 in particular left plenty of mysteries. From seasons-long plot lines to newer issues, Virgin River season 4 introduces plenty of questions to keep audiences busy until season 5 premieres. Here are the biggest questions Netflix’s Virgin River must answer in season 5.
6 How Big Of A Threat Is Melissa In Virgin River?
Throughout Netflix’s Virgin River, Calvin has been a huge threat to the main Virgin River cast, but he is replaced as an antagonist late in season 4. One of the new big threats in Virgin River is Melissa, the new runner of the lumberyard and the drug business it covers for. However, while it was clear how far Calvin was willing to go to further his goals, not much is known about the kind of threat Melissa is.
At the end of Virgin River season 4, Melissa is introduced to Jack and Mel as Nick's sister, with whom Jack signs a business deal. It is later revealed that someone is taking photos of the meeting, giving it a nefarious air. This could make Melissa an even bigger antagonist, as it is unclear what she wants with Jack and Mel. Additionally, outside of her clear involvement in Calvin’s death, little is known to ascertain how big of a threat Melissa is. Because of this, Melissa is definitely a character who should be further explored in Virgin River season 5.
5 What Will Happen With Denny's Health In Virgin River?
One of Virgin River season 4’s subplots surrounds Doc’s grandson, Denny, who first appeared at the end of season 3. Over the course of the Netflix show's season 4, Denny gets close to Connie’s niece Lizzie, but the two have a falling out when Denny rejects Lizzie’s advances to make their friendship something more. At the end of Virgin River season 4, Denny informs Lizzie that the reason he doesn’t want to get involved in a romantic relationship with her is that he has Huntington’s Disease, which is terminal. This explains Denny’s behavior in Virgin River but also opens up questions about his prognosis.
Although Huntington’s Disease has a varied life expectancy, it is not clear how long Denny has to live. However, some of Denny’s behavior, such as stealing pills from the clinic, suggests that he isn’t doing as well as he seems to be in Netflix’s Virgin River. Between the big reveal about Denny’s health and the fact that Denny hasn’t told Doc and Hope about his illness, Denny’s health and future are sure to be a huge source of tension in Virgin River season 5 that the Netflix show needs to explore.
4 What Will Happen To Doc's Practice In Virgin River Season 5?
The future of Doc’s medical practice has been up in the air in recent seasons of Virgin River. This leads Doc to hire a second doctor, Cameron, to help balance the workload. It doesn’t take long for Cameron to form a crush on Mel, and a wedge comes between them when Cameron expresses his disapproval of Jack to Mel during Virgin River season 4. Although Mel tries to make things right, Cameron resigns from Doc’s practice at the end of the Netflix show's season 4. Coupled with Mel’s resignation due to her pregnancy, the future of Doc’s practice is now uncertain in Virgin River.
With Mel and Cameron both leaving Doc’s practice, Doc is once again its only faculty, bringing the clinic back to where it was in Virgin River season 1. Though it’s unlikely that Mel will be gone from the practice for long, being alone at the clinic while Hope requires home care and his imminent retirement will place lots of stress on Doc. Being the only doctor in the town of Virgin River comes with a level of job security, but the future of Doc’s medical practice is something that definitely needs to be explored in Virgin River season 5.
3 What Will Happen To Preacher And Paige In Virgin River?
Paige and Preacher’s situation in Virgin River has been ongoing since season 1, when Preacher found out that Paige and her son have been on the run from her ex-husband Vince. Virgin River season 4 sees Preacher worrying about Paige and her son Christopher’s whereabouts after the latter has been kidnapped. Paige reappears and finds out Christopher has been taken by Vince. When Paige attempts to trade herself for Christopher’s release, Preacher gets involved and knocks Vince out. Though Preacher, Paige, and Christopher are safe for the time being, it is unclear what will happen to the trio moving forward.
There are a lot of aspects of Preacher and Paige’s situation that remain open-ended after Virgin River season 4’s finale. For example, it is unclear if Preacher merely knocked out Vince or if he killed him, which could potentially spell trouble for the chef. Additionally, it remains unanswered whether Paige and Christopher will return to the titular town, staying with Preacher, or if they must keep moving. There is also the issue of Preacher’s new relationship with Julia to contend with as well. Because of the plethora of questions stemming from this plot, Preacher and Paige’s fates must be explored in Virgin River season 5.
2 Will Brie's Ex-Return To Virgin River?
Jack’s sister Brie arrived in Virgin River in the Netflix show’s third season, bringing a mysterious past with her. It is revealed that Brie was forced to quit her job and leave her old life to evade her abusive ex. However, the past comes back to haunt her when her ex, Don, reappears, requesting that she sign an NDA regarding what happened between them. Brie refuses and threatens to file a lawsuit against him. It is left unclear whether this is enough to deter Don from ing Brie further or if he will return in the future, making their storyline one that Virgin River season 5 must cover.
1 Who Is Really The Father Of Charmaine's Twins In Virgin River?
For all four seasons of Virgin River, Charmaine, Jack’s on-again-off-again girlfriend, has been pregnant with his twins. Charmaine’s pregnancy turns her into one of Jack and Mel’s biggest antagonists, constantly trying to either get Jack back or remove him from their children’s lives. However, in Virgin River season 4, a distressed Charmaine reveals to Jack and Mel that she has been lying and that her babies are not really Jack’s. Jack not being the father of Charmaine’s twins is arguably the biggest bombshell of Virgin River season 4, if not the entire series.
After the huge reveal during the ending of Virgin River season 4, theories have arisen regarding the true parentage of Charmaine’s babies. One big fan theory points to the father being Mike. However, there is no conclusive evidence regarding who fathered Charmaine’s twins other than it not being Jack. The real parentage of Charmaine’s twins is arguably the biggest unanswered question of Virgin River season 4, which is definitely one that the Netflix show’s fifth season must address.
