The first trailer for Voltron: Legendary Defender season 3 has been released online, giving us a sneak peek at who the Voltron Force will be up against this coming outing. Bore out of his father Emperor Zarkon's defeat in the previous iteration of the show, Prince Lotor will be stepping up to the plate as the leader of the Galra Empire.

Coming out of a devastating loss, the prince is summoned to continue his father's mission to inflict terror and amass more power. Following the tumultuous battle between the Empire and Voltron by the end of last season, the former Black Paladin turned evil was left on life which prompted Haggar to reach out to Prince Lotor for help.

The trailer starts with the team reeling from the massive win with people celebrating their victory. Little did they know that a new antagonist in Lotor is coming in to seek revenge for what has happened to his father inflicted by the Voltron Force and Blade Mamora. The prince was also shown showcasing his hand to hand fighting skills which indicate that he is not only a good tactical leader but also a capable fighter.

Aside from the looming danger that Lotor will be inflicting, another hurdle that the Voltron forces will be facing is their inability to form Voltron. You may  that despite the good side winning in season 2 finale battle, the Paladins later came back to the Castle hangar only to find out that Shiro has vanished from the Black Lion with his bayard left behind. Based off of what was seen in the trailer, it seems that between now and when the sophomore season of the show wrapped up, the team has yet to locate the black Paladin and pilot of the Black Lion, which leaves them vulnerable to threats.

With the disappearance of Shiro, fans are wondering whether the Netflix series will be taking on the same story arc of the original Voltron anime with Keith taking over as the new leader of the group with Shiro gone. Should this scenario come to fruition, it opens up the possibility of Princess Allura finally getting more involved in battles by possibly piloting a Lion herself.

This marks the second outing of the show this year with Voltron: Legendary Defender season 2 released just this January.
