The ending of Maggie and Negan’s rescue mission clearly set the stage for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2, showing that the Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan-led TWD spinoff has plenty more story left to tell. The very premise of Dead City, a trip to Manhattan to rescue Maggie’s son, created the impression that a six-episode story was all the Walking Dead spinoff needed. Now that the first season is over, it’s clear that Maggie and Negan’s journey in Manhattan is intended to be much more than a miniseries.
The Walking Dead: Dead City ending seemed to be building up to what felt like a bloody fight between its heroes and its villain, the Croat. Instead, the show went in a surprising direction by pitting its two protagonists against each other. No fight with the Croat was needed, as the Dead City villain shockingly kept his word and allowed Maggie to walk free with Herschel in tow. Negan, on the other hand, remained with the Croat and his boss, thus setting the stage for more stories down the road when The Walking Dead: Dead City returns for season 2.
