Several characters who have died in the comic book version of The Walking Dead are still alive in the show. AMC's post-apocalyptic zombie series does follow the comics by adapting its stories, such as "All-Out War" and "The Whisperer War," but it's not an exact retelling of the comic. Perhaps the biggest difference between the comic and the show is the cast of characters.
Going by the comics, viewers may see a twist coming or know when the show is about to introduce a new villain, but one way the show avoids being predictable is through unexpected deaths. When adapting a certain story, The Walking Dead tends to kill off a different character than the one who met their end in the comic. One example of that happened in the season 7 premiere, when Morgan (Lennie James), Dwight (Austin Amelio), and Rick (Andrew Lincoln) are dead in the comics, but exited the series and are now elsewhere in the Walking Dead universe.
Because of the show's approach to killing off characters, The Walking Dead season 10 cast doesn't look at all like the group that the comic had at this point in the story. Many of the characters who are still integral to the show's plot didn't make it this far in the comics. This of course has created some interesting scenarios. Since the comics no longer provide a blueprint for what lies ahead for these particular characters, fans are left guessing as to what the show will do with them in the long run. Will they die anyway, survive the series, or receive a different comic character's fate? The following is every dead comic character that's still active in The Walking Dead TV series.
Carol
Carol (Melissa McBride) is one of only two characters — the other being Daryl (Norman Reedus) — who has lasted through all ten seasons. In the show, Carol overcame her early hardships and grew into one of the show's strongest characters. The comic character, however, didn't have the same resilience. Living in a world populated by zombies and dealing with feelings of loneliness and rejection drove Carol to commit suicide via a zombie bite. This happened back when they still lived in the prison.
Judith
Lori and baby Judith were shot to death when the Governor and his men attacked the prison in the comics. This was one of the comic's most disturbing deaths, but it never happened in the series. Lori died during childbirth, but Judith lived through the conflict at the prison, thanks to efforts made by Tyreese (Chad Coleman). Now, Judith — played by Cailey Fleming — is 10 ten years old and a resident of Alexandria.
Rosita
Rosita outlived numerous key Walking Dead characters in the comic, but her story finally came to an end during the fair when didn't play a major role in season 10.
King Ezekiel
Like Rosita, learned that he's dying of cancer. So even though Ezekiel was able to avoid his comic counterpart's fate, he appears to be living on borrowed time.
Luke
Luke (Dan Fogler), along with Connie (Lauren Ridloff), Kelly (Angel Theory), Magna (Nadia Hiker), and Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), ed The Walking Dead after the six-year time skip in season 9. He's been active on the show throughout the conflict with the Whisperers, and was placed in mortal danger in the penultimate episode of season 10 when he and Alden (Callan McAuliffe) found themselves surrounded by Whisperers. In the comics, though, Luke never lived long enough to be an important character. He was slain by Alpha and the Whisperers during the fair.
Gabriel
The comic book version of Gabriel was on top of a water tower at Alexandria when he caught sight of a Whisperer army descending on the community. Gabriel hurried down the ladder, but broke his leg and got himself stuck. Trapped and helpless, Gabriel was killed by Beta. The TV series managed to steer clear of this simply by The Walking Dead season 10 finale when Beta and his army marches on Alexandria, Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) may survive the Whisperer War and make it to the Commonwealth story in season 11.
Beta
After Alpha's death in the comics, Beta took charge of the Whisperers and led them in an assault on Alexandria. The Whisperers failed to take Alexandria, but Beta made it out alive. Later, Beta tried to sneak into Alexandria, but was caught by Aaron and his husband, Paul. A tense battle ensued, which concluded with Aaron shooting Beta, killing him. After removing his mask, Aaron realized that Beta was actually a star basketball player.
The Walking Dead season 10 hasn't reached this point yet, but the final showdown with the Whisperers is coming, and will take place in the finale (which still doesn't have an air date). focus its attention on the Commonwealth.
