Warning! Spoilers for WandaVision episode 5.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU Phase 4's inaugural project is expected to play a pivotal part in the franchise's budding multiverse. And the appearance of Fox's iteration of Scarlet Witch's twin brother in the show could be the first step toward this massive endeavor for Marvel Studios.
The Disney+ series' latest outing saw Scarlet Witch and Vision's growing family now living in the '80s, with their twins, Tommy and Billy rapidly growing up — something they can control themselves. Meanwhile, the outside world, which was established in episode 4, is continuing to monitor them in the form of peacekeeping agency SWORD, using Monica Rambeau as a point of reference for what it's like to be inside Westview. The fifth episode has a number of shocking moments such as Scarlet Witch stepping out of her pocket reality to confront SWORD for the first time since WandaVision started. But the episode's final frame unveiled a surprising cameo: Evan Peters being introduced as Wanda's twin, Pietro, a.k.a. Quicksilver, in the MCU.
ittedly, this could be confusing as Aaron Taylor-Johnson originally played Wanda's twin brother in the MCU franchise. But as Darcy said in the WandaVision episode, the character was recast; it's more complicated than straight-up switching actors playing the same part, however. Evans previously played a different version of Pietro Maximoff in the X-Men: Dark Phoenix which was the final installment of the franchise.
After the historic 2019 Disney-Fox deal in which Disney acquired Fox's TV and movie assets, Marvel Studios reclaimed the rights to X-Men, Fantastic Four, and all their tie-in characters that have l0ng-existed separately from the MCU. With this, Kevin Feige and his team can now bring these characters to their franchise, which includes Peters' version of Quicksilver. Prior to this, there was an assumption that the X-Men franchise was going to be rebooted as its timeline is too convoluted to be incorporated into the MCU. With Evans' appearance in WandaVision, however, that may not be the case. Instead, Marvel Studios can legitimize the existence of Fox's X-Men film series through the multiverse.
If Peters' Pietro is indeed the version of the character from Fox's mutant franchise, it might mean that Taylor-Johnson's iteration could still appear. As revealed in previous WandaVision outings and further highlighted in its latest episode, Scarlet Witch has the ability to will her wants into existence. Given this, it's curious why she somehow manifested a different form of her twin brother. It could be an indication that the existence of the pocket reality is causing a rift within the multiverse, resulting in alternate universes unexpectedly spilling into each other.
