Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Through Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), Marvel dropped some surprising revelations about Scarlet Witch’s powers and where they came from in WandaVision episode 8. It was finally confirmed that Wanda’s abilities are actually a form of magic. Furthermore, it was said that the power she uses is Chaos Magic, which is easily one of the strongest powers in Marvel Comics. Episode 8 also dropped the first reference to Wanda’s comic book codename and suggested that the “Scarlet Witch” name may be a sorceress of legend that Wanda could evolve into in the future. Marvel making Wanda’s connection to magic official in WandaVision serves as a big step toward her Doctor Strange 2 role.
It’s been known for a while that Scarlet Witch would be teaming with Doctor Strange for his second solo MCU movie, despite the fact that Wanda had never been clearly established as a magical character like her comic book counterpart. WandaVision has changed all of that and could go even further in setting up Doctor Strange 2 by teasing who the movie’s villain is. It may be that the villain has a behind-the-scenes in presence in Wanda and Vision’s Disney+ series. Among the characters suspected to fill this role are Nightmare and Mephisto. Both make sense, but it could be a different character instead. Here’s why the introduction of Chaos Magic could bring Chthon to the MCU in Doctor Strange 2.
Chthon & Chaos Magic In Marvel Comics Explained
One of the most powerful villains the Avengers have ever faced in Marvel Comics is a character’s that rarely seen in the flesh. That’s because evil sorcerer Chthon has been trapped in Wundagore Mountain for many centuries. Billions of years ago, Chthon ruled the Earth as one of the planet’s Elder Gods. Commonly referred to as the God of Chaos, Chthon eventually developed into a nearly unbeatable, demonic entity. What made him so formidable was his mastery of a mystical art called Chaos Magic, which he could use to rewrite reality as he pleased. Since he was too powerful to be killed, a group of sorcerers discovered that the only way to beat him was to imprison him.
Long after being trapped in Wundagore Mountain, Chthon finally saw an opportunity to return to Earth when a pair of twins were born on the mountain peak. At that very moment, Chthon secretly imbued one of the children – Wanda Maximoff – with some of his essence. His reason for doing so was to create a vessel for his return. As a result of his actions, Wanda too became capable of weaving Chaos Magic. Once Scarlet Witch grew stronger in her powers, Chthon made his big move and used his pawns on Earth to possess her body in the 1970s. Luckily, the combined efforts of the Avengers and Agatha Harkness were able to stop him from getting what he wanted. Since that day, Chthon has made other attempts to make use of Scarlet Witch and her abilities.
Chthon Could Have Given Scarlet Witch Her MCU Powers
Before WandaVision, there wasn’t much room in the MCU for Chthon to be worked into Wanda’s MCU story. How she got her powers in what the Mind Stone really did was awaken her potential. Apparently, Scarlet Witch was using magical hexes when she was just a child, she just didn’t know it at the time. Now it’s been stated that she uses Chaos Magic, the same power that Chthon gave her in the comic books. If Chaos Magic exists in the MCU, then it stands to reason that its creator from the comics could exist as well.
It’s worth noting that though Marvel provided quite a few illuminating details about Scarlet Witch’s hidden past, one thing it didn’t perfectly spell out was why she of all people possesses Chaos Magic. This is an answer that Marvel might be saving for later, especially if it links her to Chthon. It may be that Wanda’s affinity for Chaos Magic started with her birth. If she was born on Wundagore Mountain – or wherever the MCU’s Chthon is imprisoned – Chthon could have reached out to her and touched her with his power in secret. It may be Agatha, who just discovered that Wanda can control Chaos Magic, who figures out the connection between Wanda and the Elder God in the next episode. As a sorceress who has lived since the 17th century, she would naturally possess vast knowledge of numerous forms of magic and sorcerers from history. She may also know about Chthon, his imprisonment, and his connection to Chaos Magic. Agatha could tell Wanda that Chthon is the character responsible for all her abilities.
Chthon Could Be Doctor Strange 2’s Villain
Similar to what has occurred before in the comics, this ancient god from Earth's history could make his grand entrance thanks to Scarlet Witch. If the fight with Agatha Harkness forces Wanda to unleash her full power, that could open a doorway for Chthon to break out of his prison. After all, that was the entire point of giving her abilities in the first place, and this could be the moment he’s been waiting for forever since he infused her with his essence. Once that happens, Chthon may attempt to resume his role as the God of Chaos on Earth. As strong as Scarlet Witch may be, Chthon would be an even greater threat. One of the reasons why he hardly ever gets to appear in person in the comics is because the Avengers usually do everything it takes to keep him from getting loose. Chthon getting free could easily spell doom for Earth’s heroes. A character with this much power would be more than a match for the Sorcerer Supreme in the MCU. If he obtains his freedom in WandaVision, he could shake the foundations of the multiverse in Doctor Strange 2. As for what Scarlet Witch may do in the movie, she could either be the vessel he possesses or an ally who helps Strange clean up a mess she helped make.
