With WandaVision arriving on Disney+, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is back, and it is starting with two of its core of The Avengers. However, things are strange in the series, and it brings up a lot of questions about Wanda Maximoff's powers and how it can cause her to lose control.
Throughout the years in Marvel Comics, the Scarlet Witch has been a hero. Still, she has also made questionable decisions that make her one of the most hated heroes among the superhero community. While she has served as a powerful member of The Avengers, she has also caused more destruction than many supervillains.
Hero: Vision And The Scarlet Witch
The Avengers by government Henry Peter Gyrich and quit the team. This was in 1982, and Wanda and Vision's story continued in their own comic by Steve Englehart, Richard Howell, Andy Mushynsky, Janet Jackson, Adam Philips & L. Lois Buhalis.
This is the best primer for WandaVision, as it shows them settling into domestic life and even included the birth of their twins, which is also part of the Disney+ series.
Villain: Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants
Scarlet Witch started her Marvel career as a villain. This happened in X-Men #4 by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Paul Reinman & Artie Simek. Wanda and her brother Quicksilver as part of Magneto's group of evil mutants, along with Toad and Mastermind.
However, after this appearance, Marvel decided that Wanda and Quicksilver were better served as good guys and put them with The Avengers instead. That is where Wanda mostly remained while Quicksilver bounced around from good to bad throughout the years.
Hero: The Last Days Of Magic
In WandaVision, it seems that the Scarlet Witch is proving to be one of the most powerful mystics in the world. That is also a fact in Marvel Comics, as she is one of the top mystics that Doctor Strange calls on when he needs help. While Strange has had to stop Wanda on more than one occasion when she messes up, she has also proved to be an invaluable ally.
In the 2016 crossover storyline "The Last Days of Magic," the Empirikul arrive on Earth and try to wipe out all magic in the name of science, and Wanda is one of the more powerful allies that arrives to help Strange stop them.
Villain: The Witch Of Wundagore Mountain
In Avengers #185-187 by Mark Gruenwald, Steven Grant, David Michelinie, John Byrne, Dan Green, Roger Slifer & John Costanza, Scarlet Witch became a dangerous villain to The Avengers. However, she was not in control of her actions.
Wanda and her brother Quicksilver went to Wundagore Mountain and learned that everything they knew about their birth and parents was a lie. However, Mordred the Mystic captured Wanda and Chthon possessed her, turning her into an almost unstoppable force against The Avengers.
Hero: Avengers Vs. X-Men
Avengers V. X-Men Jason Aaron, Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Jonathan Hickman & Olivier Coipel, Wanda was still one of the most hated people to all mutants.
That made it a no-brainer concerning who she would team up with during this battle of superheroes. Her arrival was a little too later, as a Phoenix-possessed Namor had attacked and laid waste to the kingdom of Wakanda. However, Wanda showed up and helped take down the powerful Namor, taking away one more host for the Phoenix Force.
Villain: Darker Than Scarlet
It seems that Wanda's evilest moments started as being easily controlled by others. In West Coast Avengers 56-57, 60-62 by Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, Paul Ryan, Danny Bulanadi, Bob Sharen & Bill Oakley, it was more than that.
Wanda learned her children were wiped from existence, and that allowed her mind to falter and open up for Immortus to take control. He used her reality-altering powers to create a threat that not even her Avengers teammates could stop.
Hero: Witch's Road
In 2015, Scarlet Witch by James Robinson, Vanesa Del Rey, Jordie Bellaire & Cory Petit gave Wanda her first-ever official Marvel Comics series. While she had a limited series in 1994, this was the first longer series that allowed the creative team to really showcase what makes Scarlet Witch unique.
The series shows Wanda as she tries to understand and gain better control over her magical skills that had, at times, almost destroyed the world. This is arguably the one series that gave Scarlet Witch the respect she deserves.
Villain: Avengers Disassembled
While Scarlet Witch has found hatred from all mutants after the House of M storyline, her most destructive moment came in Avengers #500-503, which was the "Avengers Disassembled" storyline by Brian Michael Bendis, David Finch, Danny Miki, Frank D'armata, Albert Deschesne & Richard Starkings.
In this, Wanda ed that she had children once and had them destroyed and wiped from her memory. This caused her to lash out against the world, and she took the battle to The Avengers, killing both Ant-Man and Hawkeye before Doctor Strange finally arrived to shut her down.
Hero: Avengers: The Children's Crusade
In Avengers: The Children's Crusade by Allan Heinberg, Jim Cheung, Mark Morales, Justin Ponsor & Cory Petit, Scarlet Witch finally met her children. She broke bad originally because she had her children taken from her, despite the fact she created them with her magic.
However, their spirits lived on in Young Avengers Wiccan and Speed, and they set out to find their mom following Avengers Disassembled, only to find her alongside Doctor Doom. In this series, Wanda finally redeemed herself in the eyes of The Avengers.
Villain: House Of M
House of M is the event that made Scarlet Witch "public enemy No. 1" of the mutant community. This followed the events of Avengers Disassembled. The Avengers had to decide what to do with Wanda after killing Ant-Man, Hawkeye, and Agatha Harkness and started a giant battle that almost brought down the Avengers.
This allowed her to create a world where it was her idea of an idyllic situation. When she realized what she did was wrong, she said the words "no more mutants," and 98-percent of the world's mutants lost their powers.
