WandaVision's first two episodes took place almost entirely in the sitcom fantasy. Episode 3 also showed Westview, while episode 4, "We Interrupt This Program," finally revealed what was happening outside of the world that seems to have been created by Wanda/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). episodes are expected to show the two worlds colliding and will also feature a huge cameo Olsen can't believe hasn't leaked yet.
The shift to the real world came at the right time to silence critics who had complained Black Widow, says the plan was always to start in Westview.
Speaking exclusively to Screen Rant, Schaeffer says creatives never considered starting WandaVision off in the real world. You can read her comments on the matter below:
Screen Rant: This show is phenomenal, and it feels more and more like a comic book each week. How much discussion or debate was there on how to present the central mystery of the show? Did you ever consider starting it in the real world?
Jac Schaeffer: First of all, thank you. Thank you for all the things you're saying. Especially about it feeling like a comic book because that was always the intention. And to that point, no, there was never any discussion about starting it in the real world ever.
Schaeffer's comments are confirmation that she, Marvel, and the rest of the creative team had supreme confidence in their plan for WandaVision. That seems to have paid off, with the show quickly becoming one of the most talked about series of the past year. Saving a good chunk of the mystery for episode 4 seems to have helped with that. Just how much of that mystery has truly been revealed is uncertain, though it does seem likely at this point Westview is a projection of Wanda's psyche. Why she would have created it, or if she chose to or was forced to, remains less clear.
Starting the show in Westview makes sense for other reasons as well. For one, it increases the viewer's investment in the world created there. It also emphasizes just how different WandaVision is from other MCU stories, making it an exciting departure for Marvel. The show is clearly a labor of love for Schaeffer and everyone else involved in the series. With season 1 halfway through already, things are set to get increasingly dramatic in WandaVision's coming episodes, as the show builds to its still mysterious conclusion.
