explained SWORD's history within the MCU to audiences.

Principal among the reveals was that Maria Rambeau had founded SWORD. Likely in response to the events of Skrulls and Kree changed that. Across the next few decades, he rose through the ranks and consistently prepared for threats from above. As such, it was curious why Maria didn't just SHIELD.

The answer may rest in the agency's name change. In the comics, the acronym referred to sentient worlds, not weapons. The alteration denoted that the MCU's SWORD focused less on alien worlds but on super-powered beings. Based on Hayward and Monica's conversation, however, space was a focal point of SWORD's mission statement. Likewise, SHIELD was widely established to have also monitored super-powered people. As such, it made even less sense for Maria to put all that work in, given that the SWORD and SHIELD agencies had almost identical agendas. Of course, it could be as simple as Maria distrusting SHIELD. Though Carol Danvers believed fully in Fury, Maria might've wanted to separately lookout for her (and other such heroes). Regardless, that (as well as SWORD's conception in the '90s) would provoke a bigger question: Where have they been all this time?

Created by Joss Whedon, SWORD emerged on the page as having always been there but merely in the shadows. That would appear to not be the case in the MCU. Firstly, even Darcy Lewis knew exactly who they were, speaking of them as though they were commonplace. Secondly, Jimmy Woo reached out with no issues, so clearly knew of them so in-depth to be familiar with their protocols. Finally, Nick Fury had to have known of them - given the people in charge. As such, it stretched credibility that they'd never been mentioned. Even more contrived was why they'd never been present at any major MCU event so far.

Whether their purview was sentient weapons or worlds, plenty of crises unfolded that would call for their inclusion. Be it the same arrival of Thor that spurred on SHIELD or the emergence of The Hulk, it's surprising that SWORD wasn't there. Whether it was the intergalactic attack from the Chitauri or Thanos' direct battle for the remaining Infinity Stones, it's strange that SWORD didn't the fray. Though Monica and Maria were indisposed, their heroic spirit should've been built enough into the fabric of the entire organization to prompt action.

The MCU timeline was broken by Spider-Man: Homecoming and more in the last few years. Still, it's something that could've been just as easily avoided. Like the comics, SWORD could have been established as a direct offshoot of SHIELD — perhaps even one that emerged after its fall. Similarly, given the focus on sentient weapons, tying it to the Sokovia Accords would be another option. That would've allowed it to carry on previously-established and leftover plotlines. SWORD being a creation of Maria Rambeau was no doubt a powerfully poignant one. However, it also made the agency's absence thus far more glaring overall. As such, it marked one of the very few missteps offered by WandaVision. With multiple episodes to go, though, it'll be interesting to see if the inconsistencies are belatedly addressed.
