A new live-action project, there are plenty of ways to dive into Warhammer 40K's various storylines, allowing players to jump into the lore of the game in countless ways.
Today, Cubicle 7 announced it was developing a new tabletop RPG set during the Horus Heresy, the seismic civil war that shaped the landscape for Warhammer 40K's present day. Pre-orders for the new RPG will go on sale this summer, with both a Core Rulebook and a Starter Set releasing in 2026. No details on whether it would adapt one of Cubicle 7's other Warhammer 40K RPGs or use a new game engine were announced as part of the press release.
Warhammer 40K's Horus Heresy Explained
The Horus Heresy Shaped Warhammer 40K's Universe
The Horus Heresy is the most epic storyline in Warhammer 40K lore, even though it takes place 10,000 years before the present day of Warhammer 40,000. The Horus Heresy involves a civil war within the Imperium of Man, with one side led by Warmaster Horus, the once-favored son of the Emperor, and the other led by the Emperor of Mankind. After suffering a significant injury, Horus was corrupted by the powers of Chaos and turned half of the Emperor's forces against him.

Is Space Marine 2 Worth Playing If You Don't Know Warhammer 40K Lore?
Space Marine 2 seems really connected with Warhammer 40K Lore, so is it worth playing if you don't know anything about the series first?
The impact of the Horus Heresy was significant - Horus was killed, the Emperor of Mankind was mortally wounded and placed into a massive supercomputer that keeps his psychic consciousness alive, and the progress of the Imperium ground to a halt. Much of the Horus Heresy was forgotten about or mythologized by the Imperium for over 10,000 years, although there are a few characters who still what happened.
Our Take: This Is The Warhammer RPG We've Been Looking For
Horus Heresy Offers A Very Unique Storytelling Experience
The Horus Heresy is sci-fi tragic melodrama at its finest. To be blunt, it's one of the best Warhammer stories of all time and has plenty of room for RPG development. From the stunning betrayals to the constant struggle to survive while pushed to your back feet, a Horus Heresy TTRPG could feel very different from the typical power fantasy that comes with Warhammer 40K. We can't wait to learn more about this Warhammer 40K RPG when it releases next year.
