The beloved Call of Duty: Warzone map Verdansk is reportedly about to get wiped off of the face of the Earth, never to be seen ever again. Infinity Ward is reportedly preparing a new event that will erase the map and replace it with some new map. Exact details on the extinction-like event are unknown.
Warzone has been a massive success for the company, helping contribute to the over $3 billion Activision made on Call of Duty last year. It combined the satisfying, tactical yet still fast-paced gameplay of Modern Warfare with a big battle royale setting. Even though Treyarch previously attempted a battle royale, Warzone hit a spot that few other games could and felt far more realized. The game quickly captured the hearts of fans and even attracted plenty of newcomers. Despite being a year-old game, Warzone has maintained its popularity and even been a big favorite for streamers like Dr Disrespect.
Reputable leaker Tom Henderson is reporting (via GameRant) that Warzone's Verdansk map will be eradicated and never return. Unlike the Rebirth Island map, the next map will not run parallel with Verdansk via separate playlists or map voting. It will be completely gone and, unless Infinity Ward or Raven chooses to do a special event, it will stay gone. There's currently no word as to what the next map will be, but it's likely coming soon if Infinity Ward wants to time this with Warzone's one year anniversary on March 10th.
It's expected that Warzone will be getting an all-new event with zombies very soon, but details are scarce. It's not hard to imagine that somehow, the rumored nuke coming to Warzone will be linked with the zombies. Whether the zombies need to be wiped out with a nuke or the nuke actually creates the zombies remains to be seen, but it seems like something really big is coming and it won't be long before fans get to see it for themselves.
It's unclear if any of this will tie-in to the next Call of Duty. The untitled game is reportedly being developed by Sledgehammer Games and is rumored to return to a WWII setting. Activision has doubled down on its commitment to the battle royale in future games and Henderson has even leaked that the next game will be revealed within Call of Duty: Warzone sometime later this year, similar to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
