Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Watson season 1 finale

Although Ingrid and Stephens might not have seen eye to eye in events of Watson's season 1 ending, the power dynamic between Ingrid and Stephens shifted in a major way. Eve Harlow’s neurologist clearly intimidated Stephens throughout much of Watson season 1, and the revelation that she was responsible for her father’s death didn’t make Peter Mark Kendall’s character any less scared of her.

While Screenrant, Peter Mark Kendall said:

“I think part of the show, and part of what Watson has been teaching these fellows, is to understand and appreciate the really gray areas of life, and the nuance of things, and that right and wrong isn't always a very easy thing to decide. So, I'm hoping that there's some kind of way for him to forgive, but also not forget… I think, for most of the season, Stephens has been terrified of Ingrid. So, I think it's just because she's a tough person to get along with, but I think that shows some cool growth with Stephens to have the confidence or the will to say that. And we'll see what happens if that's the end of their relationship, or maybe that's just the beginning of their relationship.”

What This Means For Watson Season 2

The Actor Noted That Stephens Was Terrified Of Ingrid Throughout Season 1

Eve Harlow as Ingrid Derian in Watson

It would be a tall order for Stephens to forgive Ingrid, but Watson’s season 1 finale did sow the seeds of this twist. Ingrid initially worked with Moriarty to sabotage Watson’s attempts to save Stephens and Adam from the villain’s genetically engineered virus. However, after she revealed this to Watson, the pair worked together to fool the antagonist and turn the tables on him. In a twist that will be genuinely shocking to anyone familiar with the original Sherlock Holmes stories, Ingrid and Watson successfully defeated Moriarty in season 1’s finale.

ScreenRant interviews showrunner Craig Sweeny about Watson season 1 episode 13's death, that kiss, Ingrid's decision, and what to expect in season 2.

Now that Watson season 1 killed off Moriarty, there is no better time for Ingrid to try and rebuild her relationship with Stephens. It is very understandable that Kendall’s character wants nothing to do with her, but showrunner Craig Sweeny said to Screen Rant that the series was planning “A new and hopefully equally interesting arc with Ingrid in the second season.” This means Ingrid could still change her ways and, in the process, earn the trust of Stephens.

Our Take On Stephens and Ingrid’s Relationship In Watson Season 2

Watson’s Second Outing Has A Chance to Change Their Dynamic

It would be intriguing to see how Stephens and Ingrid’s dynamic evolves and changes in Watson season 2. While Kendall is right to note that Stephens was always tentative around Ingrid, finding out she was working with Moriarty was worse than anything the crew thought she was capable of. That said, the complex character deserves a second chance and, while it might be hard to imagine a friendship between the pair, stranger things have happened on network procedurals. As such, Watson season 2 is right to keep Eve Harlow’s Ingrid around for now.
