Tim Burton's Gomez Addams (Luis Guzman). Also in the cast are Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams, Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie, Thora Birch, and Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the live-action movies The Addams Family and Addams Family Values.
Created by cartoonist Charles Addams, The Addams Family focuses on a macabre, eccentric, and bizarre household of characters serving as a satirical version of the standard aristocratic family model. Gomez's brother is Uncle Fester, a portly, hairless man who always wears a long, fur coat and is able to generate electricity. Strange, loyal, and sweet-natured, Uncle Fester has been a staple character since the early Addams Family cartoons, although he has frequently been portrayed on his own, away from the family. The character was previously portrayed by Jackie Coogan in the 1960s TV adaptation, while his most-popular incarnation was played by Christopher Lloyd in the two 1990s movies.
The trailer shows plenty of Tim Burton and Netflix's Addams Family series or even have a bigger role to play. For now, his part in the show seems to be a purposeful mystery.
Why The Wednesday Show Is Keeping Uncle Fester A Mystery
Wednesday finds its title character sent to a prestigious boarding school called Nevermore Academy, where her parents, Morticia and Gomez, met. While there, a series of mysterious murders take place in the surrounding town, which could potentially serve as a plot point that brings Uncle Fester into the story, perhaps to assist his niece. It's also possible that the mystery of Uncle Fester will play a large role in the series, which will be unraveled throughout, rather than disclosed right away. Creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough stated that Wednesday is trying to be its own thing, separate from the Addams Family TV show and movies, and this could be another reason that Uncle Fester is being held in secrecy, rather than simply showing up as usual. Another possibility could have to do with casting. Uncle Fester isn't even listed on Wednesday's IMDb page, so it could be a matter of waiting to reveal a unique actor in the role, or perhaps a return of Christopher Lloyd to the part. Either way, Uncle Fester's casting remains a mystery.
There are two notable scenes in the Wednesday trailer that suggest Uncle Fester's presence in the show, either living or dead. In one, Morticia is in a graveyard, looking somber and tossing a single-stem red rose toward an unseen grave. It's possible this could be Uncle Fester's grave, but it could also be another character from the series — or someone unknown. Another scene in Tim Burton's Wednesday trailer shows a mysterious man in a long cloak, wearing a top hat, and carrying a cane standing in front of a burning building. Though this figure appears to have long hair, it could very well be Uncle Fester in disguise, or the man have some type of connection to him. Whether either of those scenes has anything to do with the character or not, it's apparent that the show is not yet ready to reveal what role, if any, Uncle Fester plays in Wednesday, which looks to be an intriguing series with or without him.
