  • Ethan Plath is deeply wounded by his mother Kim Plath's actions. He desperately seeks her understanding and .
  • Kim's self-absorption and lack of emotional depth reinforce Ethan's feelings of isolation and depression.
  • While seeking personal fulfillment, Kim neglects Ethan's needs.

Kim Plath did to him, and while he's trying to reconnect, Kim is so spacey right now. Her son is extremely sensitive, although he makes a show of not feeling much. The truth is that Ethan's hurting badly - he still loves Olivia Plath, who frolicked in beautiful Sedona while he sang the most concerning "hurting tune" imaginable.

Yes, Ethan's lyrics were a cry for help. He referenced wanting to end his life. Can Kim help the young man to heal? Maybe not.

Sure, Kim loves Ethan in her own way, but at the moment, she's in a full-throttle midlife crisis. Moving into what she majestically calls a "houseboat" (it's really just a boat that can't actually go anywhere) with her younger daughters is just the beginning. She's also dating a man that Ethan isn't emotionally prepared to meet - his name is Ken Palmer. Kim's lost weight - she's got a little Hollywood glamour going. While she deserves happiness, it seems like what she wants always comes first.

Ethan Plath Wants A Typical Mother

Kim Can't Feel His Pain

At some point, Ethan's going to have to figure out how to deal with his mommy issues. No one can cling to that stuff forever. Blaming parents for problems can only go on for so long. However, far more than most, Ethan has legitimate gripes.

Kim was basically engineering the end of his marriage the whole time he was with Olivia. She made her daughter-in-law's life a living hell. She was a nightmare mother-in-law.

Instead of apologizing for this and more, which she really should do, she tries to gloss over the problems. It's like Kim does anything she can to avoid facing reality. She's living in some sort of dream world. Ethan's problems are all too real - it's clear that he's dangerously depressed, but does that ever sink in? No - Kim's more interested in living out her fantasies than being an emotionally present mother. Ethan's said she doesn't feel things like she should. He clearly longs for a "normal" mother.

Weight Loss Isn't Enough To Change Kim Plath

She Is So Narcissistic

Kim will do whatever it takes to get her way - this is an unattractive trait, especially as it pertains to interference in her children's lives. If problems can be compared to a front door that's locked, Kim will bash her way in, breaking the chain on the door in the process. She will cross boundaries that shouldn't ever be crossed. She will violate other people's rights.

Maybe she is a narcissist. As the season began, as seen in the clip above, Ethan and Olivia were at a crossroads. Ethan dealt with his pain alone.

He's always been emotionally alone, even with Olivia. Kim set the stage for his feelings of isolation. Yes, Kim's thinner now, after opening a dance studio (it's now closed) and embarking on a wilder life that saw her breaking so many of her own rules. She enjoyed the freedoms she didn't let her kids have. She was shameless about changing after denying the Plath kids so much and hurting her long-suffering husband-turned-ex, Barry Plath.

Kim's houseboat isn't exactly the Titanic, but maybe it's a symbol of just how unmoored this woman really is. If she tried to put herself in Ethan's shoes, she might get somewhere. However, narcissists have trouble doing that. They only know how they feel. Kim needs to sit down with Ethan without a lot of people around. She needs to say she's sorry. She needs to really be sorry. Is that too much to ask when her son's life is so dark? For Welcome to Plathville's Kim, it always seems like it's too much to ask.
