Summary

  • Olivia Plath is taking control of her life by leaving Ethan Plath. They were rarely on the same page.
  • Olivia values freedom and adventure, making her a poor fit for the Plath family. Her mother-in-law Kim Plath judged her, but Kim's a hypocrite.
  • Ethan's immaturity and poor communication skills contributed to the breakdown of his relationship with Olivia.

I've been a he loved Olivia and still does. However, he also did hurtful things to her, such as making it all too clear that, in his opinion, she wouldn't be a good mother.

Since Ethan doesn't want to get divorced and Olivia does, she has to wear the "black hat," but really, she's a great person.

Olivia values freedom, adventure and good times. That's why she's a terrible fit for the Plath family. Always hindered by Kim's living on a boat that can't go anywhere. Kim's still all about Kim - ultimately, she's a hypocrite.

Ethan Plath Can't Accept The Truth

He Isn't Right For Olivia

In season 5, she lashed out at Ethan because he kept doing donuts in the car - she doesn't like it when he takes chances behind the wheel. She's been in car accidents, and his reckless driving triggers her. Instead of listening to her and really caring, he made it seem like Olivia was a drama queen. While he drove, she said:

This is not fun for me. i want to get out.

She really meant it. Now, in season 6, he's acting like Princess Diana when she was trapped in a horrible marriage with a shady partner. However, both of these Welcome to Plathville stars made mistakes.

Season 6 teased drama, as seen in the trailer above, and it has delivered. Ethan can be immature and doesn't always read other peoples' emotions well. That's why he had so many communication problems with Olivia over the years. He used to be so sweet and the best way for him to get back to his true self is to put the past behind him. At his best, Ethan is:

  • hard-working
  • gentle
  • loving
  • old-fashioned in a sweet way
  • faithful
  • dependable

Olivia won't be coming back - when she makes up her mind, that's it. Ethan has trouble facing reality, but some things get through. He has acknowledged that she can move from one phase of life to the next, cutting people out. However, there's no reason why she should be entangled with the Plaths now.

Why stay involved with a family where she was treated like a pariah? Why forgive people who never gave her a fair shot? Why keep trying with Ethan when every single conversation ends in confusion, tears and blame? There's just no point. Sealing herself off from the Plaths is a sign of wisdom - some space is needed, although I think it's all very sad. I like Olivia and Ethan. They're just not right for each other. Watching them talk is frustrating - there is a disconnect, and it never, ever goes away.

How would remaining tied to a family that brought so much turmoil to her life be a good thing? Olivia's decision to leave is mature. It's a logical assessment of a situation and a smart response. Olivia has grown up and wants to be happy. She knows happiness in that marriage, with that family, is not in the cards. Now, off-screen, she's got a new boyfriend, but she's not sharing a lot about him publicly. Later, she may be a bit bolder.

Ethan Pushed Olivia To The Edge In Season 5

There's No Going Back

The changes Olivia talked about during season 5, such as getting her navel pierced and getting a tattoo, were, by her own ission, a way of breaking free from the beliefs she was raised with. She was still trying to find herself and wasn't quite sure how to question all the things she'd been raised to believe. She knew she probably had "biases" and she wanted to outgrow them. Ethan seemed mostly baffled by this type of mind expansion.

Olivia isn't interested in living in the past - she's extremely adventurous. Ethan seems wild when he's in cars, but the rest of the time, he's remarkably straitlaced. They were so young when they got together - the only way they could sleep together was to get married! Kim and Barry should have given them time to really get to know each other. They should have let them sleep together and get used to each other before marriage.

Instead, they were thrown in at the deep end, needing to sink or swim. The antiquated rules that Kim and Barry made Ethan and Olivia follow eventually led to their divorce. Now that Olivia is on her own, with a new mystery man in the mix, she will not stop growing. She's her own person. In an Instagram Story, Olivia described her beau as the best thing since:

sliced bread

Through years of hassles and the general interference of the Plath family, she has never doubted herself. She's stood up for herself. Now is her time to embrace fame and the future as herself, not a Plath. It must be hard sometimes, but Olivia won't settle. I think she's a good role model for modern women - she is fully empowered now. At the same time, I feel for Ethan. Hopefully, both Welcome to Plathville stars will be okay. Please share your thoughts in the comments - I want to know what you think and how you feel.
