Marvel Comics has announced that its premier monster hero will be returning this fall in a new one-shot, Werewolf By Night #1. Jack Russell, Marvel's original Werewolf, will be ed in his latest chapter by monster hunter extraordinaire Elsa Bloodstone. This notably reunites the starring heroes of the MCU's Werewolf By Night TV special from last year, though it isn't the first time Russell and Bloodstone have ed forces in Marvel Comics.
Per Marvel Comics, Werewolf By Night #1 from writer Derek Landy and artist Fran Galán, will be "an oversized one-shot" and is slated for release this September, just in time for the Halloween season. While this monster hunter and literal monster should be natural enemies, this new title promises that Jack Russell and Elsa Bloodstone will once again set aside their differences in order to work together.
The main cover by Corin Howell evokes classic elements of Marvel's horror icons; Elsa Bloodstone peers down the iron sights of her gun while a full moon-illuminated castle looms in the distance, all silhouetted by the feral visage of the Werewolf himself.
Werewolf By Night Jack Russell Teams Up (Again) with Elsa Bloodstone
Marvel has provided a few details of what to expect:
"Certain sections of this stylish supernatural epic will be presented in black and white, reflecting the pair’s conflicting moods and unique hunting techniques.
In the shadows of black-and-white night, Jack Russell races to halt the sacrifice of a young girl at the hands of monsters. Elsa Bloodstone, in all her colorful monster-hunting glory, isn’t far behind. But can they put their differences aside long enough to save the day? And what would such a partnership even look like?"
Despite their innate differences, this won't mark the first time the Werewolf By Night and Elsa Bloodstone have worked together. 2011's Legion of Monsters by Dennis Hopeless and Juan Doe saw Bloodstone team up with the Werewolf, Morbius the Living Vampire, the Living Mummy, and Manphibian in a bloody miniseries as they set about hunting down the "real" monster behind a series of violent killings.
While this new one-shot provides another opportunity to explore the relationship between a werewolf and the woman who has dedicated her life to hunting down his kind, it's also another moment for both characters to enjoy the spotlight. Recent years have seen both Jack Russell and Elsa Bloodstone relegated to sporadic ing roles in other titles. As regularly as the full moon, however, both shine during the Halloween season. In 2022, Elsa Bloodstone starred in a short in Crypt of Shadows #1. Meanwhile, the Werewolf by Night came to blows with Moon Knight in Moon Knight Annual #1 by Jed MacKay and Federico Sabbatini.
This latest one-shot promises to offer the same brand of annual terror and suspense fans expect from the Werewolf By Night and Elsa Bloodstone. Their team-up is a continued tradition in Marvel Comics, which fans were grateful to have seen expanded to include the MCU last year.
Werewolf By Night #1 will be available September 13th from Marvel Comics!
