HBO's Westworld will be returning to screens very soon. As is the case with any series, we have plenty of questions that we really need answering. The cliffhangers of the last season, as well as the new promotional material, create a lot of mysteries.

Rather than answering our questions, the trailers for Season 3 have only created many more plot queries that we have to wonder about. Therefore, here are 10 unanswered questions we have about Season 3 of the western show — that we hope will be answered very soon.

WHAT IS CALEB'S ROLE?

Caleb is the name of the new character being introduced into the show, played by Aaron Paul. Fans are excited to see the Breaking Bad actor in the series, although we're unsure what role he will be playing exactly. It's unclear whether he is human or robot to start with.

There's a possibility that he is a downtrodden worker who has a lot in common with the robotic uprising. On the other hand, he may be some kind of drone created to do the work others won't, in order to protect human life.

WHOSE SIDE IS WILLIAM ON?

William has seemingly become one of the things he enjoyed killing. After spending years and years of his life in the park, perhaps he is now simply a robot, like those he hunts down. It begs a bigger question: whose side is the billionaire actually on?

On some level, he seems to want to make a real difference, possibly in freeing those who are oppressed by this system. On the other hand, however, he may be trying to play an even bigger game, one where the stakes are more real than viewers can imagine.

IS ASHLEY GENUINELY A ROBOT?

Luke Hemsworth's Ashley seemed to come to a realization last season that perhaps he isn't as human as he first thought. This completely changes his perspective on things, and it could also affect how he acts in the latest season of the show.

One of the most notable things about the new trailers is that it seems to place Ashley alongside the other hosts from Westworld. Is he actually a robot, or does he simply empathize with the struggle they have been going through for so long?

WHAT IS THE BIG PLAN FOR DOLORES?

Dolores is clearly plotting some kind of uprising, but what exactly is her overall plan? There are a lot of moving parts here, and it seems as if they will be focused on these various hosts coming together and changing the tide of society.

However, is the plan to get revenge, to wipe out the humans, or is it simply to peacefully coexist? Dolores has the option now of living among humanity undetected, so we don't think the plan is the latter option.

WHO DOES MAEVE ANSWER TO?

Maeve is one of the most important characters of the show. She may be the only host to have sentience, and she is on a own mission to change how Dolores is going about things. But who exactly does Maeve actually answer to?

It seems that the trailers are showing her with some kind of boss who is giving her advice. Perhaps it is Ford, or Bernard, or maybe there's a new player too. Of course, it could also be the case that Maeve is truly her own woman now.

WHICH ROBOTS HAVE SENTIENCE?

The question of sentience has been a key one throughout this show. It has been questioned repeatedly whether Dolores actually has true sentience or whether she is following a story that has been programmed into her.

Ironically, she may be the only host of the main characters that does not have free will. It seems both Bernard and Maeve have showcased signs that they are under their own power, and now with William in that category, he may also exhibit similar signals.

IS FORD STILL ALIVE?

There are constant signs to suggest that Ford could still be alive in some way, perhaps with his genuine consciousness in a robot, or maybe he faked his death the whole time and is secretly pulling the strings of Dolores.

His death was one of the most shocking moments of the first season, and to undo this would feel a little cheap. However, we really want this answered for good as we keep expecting him to appear at some point.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO WESTWORLD?

Since Westworld is having all kinds of malfunctions, there's a possibility that it could be shut down. However, Maeve's travels in the trailer show that there are plenty of other worlds to explore besides Shogun World.

It seems that we could even be heading into WWII, and perhaps the effects of the hosts spiraling out of control can only be felt in the western frontiers. Maybe people will keep on visiting this world-famous attraction for a while longer.

IS THE WORLD AWARE OF THE INCIDENTS?

Perhaps the world isn't actually conscious of what's going on in this famed theme park. The company could have kept it well under wraps in order to stop any mass panic from happening.

On the other hand, by letting the public know, they could be on the lookout for suspicious behavior, and even Dolores herself. It's difficult to know which choice the showrunners will make, as either could massively affect the narrative.

WILL ANYONE RETURN FROM THE VALLEY BEYOND?

The last season saw the creation of the Valley Beyond where the hosts that chose to do so could kill their physical bodies and allow their minds to move into a virtual reality.

Key characters such as Teddy decided to do this, but at what cost? And more importantly, will any of these characters actually return? In theory, it's easy for them as their minds could be moved back into a body once again.
