The titular droid in Pixar's 2008 hit, WALL-E, enamored fans everywhere with its heartwarming and lovable personality, but not many know that it's name has a specific meaning. Considered to be one of the best Pixar movies after it earned an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film at the 2009, WALL-E follows the life of the titular robot who lives on a deserted Earth. However, his life soon changes when it comes across another droid named Eve, who has been sent down to the planet from space with a special mission (one that will change history forever).
Although the love story to Wall-E is one of the best and sweetest elements, some fans may not have noticed that the movie is full of symbols and motifs (as seen through the plants, the environment, and the characters). Names, in particular, also hold significant importance. The human character, John, certainly lived up to his namesake as his personality was "gracious" (via Etymology Online). Mary also lived up to her namesake too as she was seen to "rebel" against the system (via Etymology Online). While the movie does explain what EVE and WALL-E's stand for, even they have a deeper meaning if fans delve into the origins.
WALL-E Stands For "Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class"
In WALL-E, the viewers learn that the titular droids name stands for "Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class". Initially, he wasn't supposed to be the only one of his kind as the movie shows that he was one of millions of droids that were created by BnL Corporation to help with "Operation Cleanup" (clean the planet of its waste). Unfortunately, this didn't work as BnL discovered that they couldn't get a handle on the rising toxicity levels, which meant the planet became inhabitable and led to humanity looking for another home. Sadly, with the humans gone, the other WALL-E droids eventually stopped functioning, leaving one alone to finish the job.
In some interpretations, WALL-E is meant to symbolize Adam (via Christianity Today) but he struggled to find an acronym and believed it "didn't have the underdog ring to it." Although Staunton itted that he wasn't trying to replace humanity in the bigger story, he also itted that there were some elements of the "first man, first woman", which is why WALL-E loneliness and desire for companionship may be familiar.
What EVE Stands For In Pixar's WALL-E Movie
Similar to the titular droid, the writers of WALL-E also tied some religious metaphors to EVE. Although EVE stands for Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator, many fans can easily see how she could represent the biblical version. For instance, WALL-E's reaction to EVE is similar to how Adam felt about his new companion. WALL-E teaching EVE about the world and the culture is quite similar as well.
The fact that she was even given the name of Eve is significant as she certainly becomes the Mother of Life after she lets humanity know Earth was inhabitable again by bringing back the plant. On the surface, it may look like a heartwarming sci-fi romance between two robots, but there's no doubt that the biblical allusions in WALL-E do have a significant meaning.
