Netflix's new crime docies, Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story, offers new insight into the horrific crimes that took place at 25 Cromwell Street, England. The Netflix show explores the crimes of one of the most infamous killer couples in the history of the United Kingdom and how they managed to lure many innocent young women to their deaths. For over 20 years, Fred and Rose West outwardly portrayed themselves as a friendly, eccentric couple who offered accommodation to lodgers at their home, but behind closed doors, they used their basement as a torture chamber.
The latest entry into Netflix's catalog of true-crime documentaries contains photographs, archival footage, audio recordings, and interviews with solicitors and families of the victims to provide a new perspective on the couple's sadistic crime spree, the investigation, and their eventual apprehension and conviction. Between 1967 and 1994, Fred and Rose West were responsible for the abduction, sexual torture, and murder of at least 12 young women, including their own 16-year-old daughter, Heather. The majority of their victims were buried in the basement and garden of their own home at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester, England.
25 Cromwell Street Was Demolished & Its Debris Destroyed
A Sidewalk Was Created Where The House Once Stood
As shown through the Netflix docies, the majority of Fred and Rose West's crimes took place at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester, England. The couple moved into the house shortly after their wedding on January 29, 1972. The three-story house was located at the end of a terraced estate and had an alley that led to St. Michael's Square, a shopping area. During their early years living in the house, Fred performed various home improvements, and the couple took in lodgers for extra money. One former lodger, Jayne Hamer, described the couple as "very loving to each other in front of everybody."

11 Most Shocking Reveals From Netflix's Fred & Rose West: A British Horror Story Documentary
Netflix's Fred & Rose West: A British Horror Story Documentary provides new, shocking insight into one of Britain's most infamous criminal cases.
Behind the exterior, Fred and Rose converted their basement into a torture chamber, where they'd tie up their victims, sexually assault and beat them before eventually killing them (via Devon Live). Fred then dismembered each victim before burying their bodies around the house. Five victims were buried in the basement, one in a bathroom extension, and three in the back garden, including their daughter, Heather. Many of the victims' remains were found with ligatures tied around their faces and masks with tubes inserted into their noses to allow them to breathe (via BBC).
In October 1996, following Fred West's suicide and Rose West's murder conviction, 25 Cromwell Street was completely demolished on orders from the Gloucester City Council (via Independent). Every piece of debris was deliberately destroyed to prevent looters, and the land was completely bulldozed. The site where 25 Cromwell Street once stood is now used as a public walkway; former neighbors of the Wests described the house as taking on "an eerie, sinister presence" before its demolition (via Cosmopolitan).
Another Property Where Fred & Rose West Lived Still Stands Today
The Wests Lived At 25 Midland Road Before Moving To Cromwell Street
Although nothing remains where 25 Cromwell Street used to be, there is a second house where Fred and Rose West lived that still stands today. Before moving to Cromwell Street, the couple resided at 25 Midland Road, having moved there with Fred's daughter, Anna Marie, from his first marriage to Catherine Costello, and his stepdaughter, Charmaine (via The Guardian). In 1971, while Fred West was serving a 10-month prison sentence for theft and fraud, Rose West savagely murdered 8-year-old Charmaine; the young girl's body was found buried on the property in 1994 during the murder investigation (via London Evening Standard).
In the aftermath of the murder investigation, the house at 25 Midland Road was renovated and put up for auction. According to an auction website, Zoopla, via Surrey Live, the property was sold in 2000 for £57,750 - equivalent to $77,735 - with one buyer describing the house as "a fine investment," despite its dark history. Today, the house at 25 Midland Road has been converted into three one-bedroom apartments. While the property has now been renovated and modernized, it still serves as a stark reminder of the horrific crimes as shown in Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story.
