"What happened to Lucas on When Calls the Heart?" is a question fans of the Hallmark Channel series have wondered after his recent storylines hinted he might be leaving. Fortunately, however, another cast member confirmed he isn't going anywhere. Like the fantasy series The Way Home, When Calls the Heart is a Hallmark Channel original drama TV show. The series premiered in January 2014, and its latest season, season 11, airs its finale on June 23, 2024. When Calls the Heart is inspired by Janette Oke's novel of the same name from her Canadian West series.

The fantastic cast of When Calls the Heart is a big reason why the show has endured so long and the relationships between the townspeople of Hope Valley are beyond charming. Lucas Bouchard (Chris McNally) first appeared on the show in season 6, episode 2, "The Queen of Hearts" and has a tumultuous relationship with series star Elizabeth (Erin Krakow). First, they dated in season 8 before breaking up over a misunderstanding. They get back together for an official courtship, and then Lucas proposes at the end of season 9. After that, things again go downhill for Elizabeth and Lucas.

Lucas & Elizabeth Break Up In The When Calls The Heart Season 10 Finale

Lucas Goes Off To Run For Governor And Elizabeth Stays In Hope Valley

Lucas and Elizabeth remained engaged until season 10, episode 11, "Long Time Running". When the local governor's opponent drops out before the election, Lucas' political party convinces him to run, but this would require Lucas to leave Hope Valley. He asks Elizabeth to go with him, but she doesn't want to leave her home, and the two separate once again. Lucas goes on to win the election in the next episode and season 10 finale, "Starry Nights".

Erin Krakow talked with ET about the emotionality of season 10, specifically how her character had to respectfully call off a marriage with Lucas and suddenly found herself having sparks with old flame, Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry). Krakow said,

"I think it's a really good authentic, challenging, emotional story. And it may be tough on some of our fans, but what I really appreciate about it is it's a story of two people who still have a very deep love for one another."

The last moments of season 10 see a shadowy figure approaching Lucas, only for the scene to cut to Nathan and Elizabeth, whose reunion is interrupted by Bill (Jack Wagner) telling them that Lucas needs help. Viewers were led to believe that something terrible happened to Lucas, but back in 2023, Krakow was quick to say Lucas was not going anywhere,

"We're not gonna lose Chris McNally. I mean, he's fantastic. I can't imagine that. Our show just grew and changed when we brought in Kevin and Chris."

Lucas and Elizabeth's budding relationship is one of the most critical arcs in When Calls the Heart, and their separation in season 10 feels like a major moment despite their breaking up previously. Both seem to have mutually agreed on the separation, but there's still a lot of closure needed, and Elizabeth and Lucas' inevitable confrontation drives season 11.

Season 11, episode 1, "When Stars Align", reveals that the shadowy figure was Lucas' ex-girlfriend Jeanette Aucoin (Cecilia Deacon). She approaches Lucas, but unbeknownst to either of them, a gangster named Casimir Shaw (Hugo Steele) has followed Jeanette intending to hurt her. Lucas tries to stop him and in the commotion, a gun goes off, injuring Lucas. While the audience is made aware of this, Lucas loses his memory of the event and is not sure who the shooter could be.

The penultimate episode of season 11 has some major revelations for Lucas, including him learning that there is no Casimir Shaw; it's Jeanette's criminal alter ego.

Chris McNally told TV Insider about what his character deals with in season 11,

"...as we progress through this Season 11 storyline, the amount of weight and pressure and stress that’s added on him and sort of chipping him away, you just get to see sides of Lucas that you haven’t seen before—some for the better and some for the worse. It’s an interesting perspective that we get to see for the first time."

It was one of her lackeys who shot Lucas, though she stopped him from finishing Lucas off out of a lingering affection for her former love. Lucas also kisses Elizabeth at the end of the episode, suggesting the pair will get back together in the When Calls the Heart season 11 finale.
