WARNING! This article contains major SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 1 and George R.R. Martin's book, Fire & Blood!Considering Aegon’s Song of Ice and Fire prophecy in Game of Thrones’ ending, Dany was unaware of the Conqueror’s dream. As King Viserys I explains to Rhaenyra, the prophecy was meant to be ed from every Targaryen ruler to their heir until the White Walkers came. But, House of the Dragon’s Targaryen civil war and unexpected deaths suggest Aegon’s dream becomes lost for a period after Rhaenyra’s demise.
However, House of the Dragon has hinted that Rhaenyra eventually informs her children of Aegon’s dream, especially since her husband Daemon Targaryen is now privy to this secret. Even if the dream doesn’t make it to Rhaenyra’s successor, Game of Thrones history reveals that some knowledge of Aegon’s dream will resurface with her descendants, with theories speculating that figures like Aegon V and Brynden Rivers knew the prophecy. Rhaegar Targaryen was also confirmed to have been obsessed with the Prince That Was Promised prophecy, suggesting his father The Mad King may have known. Although Dany was never informed of Aegon’s prophecy, she still played a significant role in fulfilling it alongside Rhaegar’s son Jon Snow.
GOT History Suggests Rhaenyra Doesn't Aegon's Dream To Her Heir
Although Rhaenyra’s sons may not on the prophecy to future generations, the Queen will more than likely give the burden of Aegon’s dream to her declared heir. Viserys often emphasized the weight and importance of Aegon’s dream, so Rhaenyra isn’t apt to let it go untold considering she could be killed in the Targaryen civil war. As such, House of the Dragon season 2 will likely feature a scene in which Rhaenyra tells her heir Jacaerys Velaryon of the prophecy. However, Jacaerys is killed at the Battle of the Gullet relatively early in the Dance of the Dragons, so this knowledge will die with him.
At the time of her death, Rhaenyra's only known surviving heir is her son Aegon the Younger, who eventually succeeds Aegon II Targaryen on the Iron Throne. It's thus theorized that Rhaenyra narrating House of the Dragon episode 1's Great Council is actually her telling the story of the Dance and Aegon's dream to her son. While it’s possible that Rhaenyra tells Aegon III of the prophecy before she dies, his young age suggests he’ll either forget the dream or purposefully ignore it after the immense tragedies suffered in the civil war. Since Aegon III likely won't be told of, , or on Aegon’s prophecy, it will seemingly die with Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon.
If Aegon's Dream Isn't ed On By Rhaenyra, How Does It Resurface?
Despite the low probability of Rhaenyra successfully ing on the burden of Aegon’s dream, Game of Thrones suggests the prophecy will not be gone forever. Like King Viserys I and Aegon the Conqueror, there will be a few more dragon dreamers after House of the Dragon’s time, such as Daeron the Drunken, Daemon II Blackfyre, and Maester Aemon, which may allow the Targaryens to rediscover the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy. It’s also possible that the prophecy was written down by a historic Targaryen like Rhaenyra, Daemon, or Aegon III in High Valyrian and secretly stored away in a book, later being found by one of their descendants.
The most likely explanation for Rhaegar’s fixation on the Prince That Was Promised prophecy is that he finds the Valyrian steel dagger, which Aegon inscribed with the Song of Ice and Fire. When held over flames, the dagger reads in High Valyrian, “From my blood come the Prince That Was Promised, and his will be the Song of Ice and Fire.” Rhaegar repeats this line almost verbatim when his son Aegon is born, indicating that when Rhaegar discovered the Prince That Was Promised prophecy, he also learned of its connection to Aegon the Conqueror’s dream. Even if Rhaenyra fails to tell her son the dream in House of the Dragon, it eventually finds its way back to the Targaryens.
