One of the biggest negative influences that Danny had on Jennifer's life was her poor decision-making skills. Although Jennifer's grades began to slip prior to her meeting Danny, she still made efforts to maintain a respectable academic standing and attendance. However, after spending more time with Danny, she started forging her report cards and embellishing her academic achievements in an effort to keep her parents happy and satisfied. After getting into a heated argument with her parents regarding Danny, Jennifer conspired with Danny to have them both killed. The decision would not only eliminate Hann and Bich from the picture, but Jennifer and Danny were convinced they would inherit up to $500,000 if they were able to successfully orchestrate their deaths. As such, Jennifer and Danny hired assailants, Lenford Crawford, Eric Carty, and David Mylvaganam to stage a home invasion gone wrong. This would cover Jennifer's tracks while also ensuring she and Danny inherit the money. However, Hann survived the ordeal and gave law enforcement crucial information.

Tragically, Jennifer's mother, Bich, died from the multiple gunshots sustained by the hired hands; Jennifer and Danny assuming Hann was, too, secured the couple's future. However, Hann would miraculously survive the shooting, which prompted doctors to put him in a medically-induced coma for three days. After awakening from his coma, Hann would recount the events of the shooting to investigators, which played a crucial role in Danny's arrest. According to Hann, Jennifer's hands weren't bound behind her back, and he recalled her conversing with one of the assailants as if they were friends.

After attempts to cover her tracks failed, Jennifer eventually confessed to her hand in her mother's murder and father's attempted murder, and confirmed the identities of Danny and everyone else involved in the crime. As a result of her confession, each member of the crime was sentenced to life in prison. What Jennifer Did confirms that Jennifer and Danny were given the possibility of parole after 25 years due to the fact they conspired to have Jennifer's parents killed rather than actually doing it themselves.
