What We Do in the Shadows season 6 is set to be the final season of the series.

Screen Rant recently had the opportunity to sit down with the cast and crew of What We Do in the Shadows season 6 ahead of the premiere. When asked if Clement and Waititi might reprise their roles on the show another time, showrunner Paul Simms revealed that "those guys were very busy" working on their TV remake of Terry Gilliam's 1981 movie Time Bandits, which they co-created with Iain Morris (Flight of the Conchords, Next Goal Wins) and which premiered on Apple TV+ in July.

While Clement and Waititi will not be appearing onscreen, the team "made sure to pay homage to them by featuring them in some still photos." Read Simms' full quote below:

Those guys were very busy doing Time Bandits. So, I hate to disappoint people, but we made sure to pay homage to them by featuring them in some still photos, so they're in there in spirit, if not in flesh.

What This Means For What We Do In The Shadows Season 6

The Show Can This Limited Homage

While Clement and Waititi will not be ing the What We Do in the Shadows cast again, their inclusion via still image reveals that the production team were at least very aware that it was necessary to pay homage to the key creatives behind the show and movie. However, they only ever minor ing roles in the world of the show, which takes place in Staten Island rather than the original movie's New Zealand, and neither have been seen in the most recent two seasons, proving the new show's ability to stand on its own without them.

The main cast of What We Do in the Shadows includes Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillén, Mark Proksch, and Kristen Schaal.

This manner of inclusion will likely also play better than in the average television show, as the mockumentary format of the series already makes for frequent use of Ken Burns-style inserts of still images depicting vampire lore as described by the characters in talking head interviews. This will allow What We Do in the Shadows' final season to include the original characters more organically, rather than featuring forced-feeling scenes of the main cast looking at or displaying photographs of the characters, with whom they have only infrequently interacted.

Our Take On This What We Do In The Shadows Season 6 Update

The Show Could Still Have A Satisfying Ending

The Vampires and Guillermo gathered in the sitting room in What We Do in the Shadows season 6.

Ultimately, it seems that What We Do in the Shadows will still be very capable of having a satisfying ending without the inclusion of new scenes featuring Clement or Waititi. The show is still taking a victory lap in its final season, as alongside the still images of the original creators and stars, it has already been confirmed that Doug Jones will be returning as Baron Afanas. It still seems likely that the season will be packed with as many cameos as possible from the most beloved ing characters.

What We Do in the Shadows season 6 debuts on FX with a three-episode premiere on October 21 with weekly episodes following on Mondays through December 16.
