WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for the What We Do in the Shadows finale.
The series finale of Alexander Skarsgård's surprise appearance in the penultimate episode of WWDITS, his brief cameo did not roll over into the final episode. The series finale was released on FX on December 16, 2024, and notably features three alternate versions of Nadja's hypnosis cutscene.
New characters like Jerry the Vampire – who made a grand introduction in the season 6 premiere – are quite literally ripped out of the story. Ultimately, the series finale of What We Do in the Shadows ends up going light on the emotional punches and instead maintains its ingenious brand of comedy until its final frame.
Why The Documentary Crew Is Wrapping Production
The vampires are hilariously indifferent about it
What We Do in the Shadows' finale pumps the brakes on the narrative storylines established through season 6 and instead abruptly lifts the veil of its documentary crew, who have finally – after 61 episodes over six seasons – gathered all the production coverage they need. It's unclear exactly what the crew plans on doing with that documentary footage but they have decided that they will no longer be filming the daily lives of the vampires and have all the footage they need. Guillermo is the only one who demands an answer to the documentary's sudden ending, as the rest of the vampires seem naturally indifferent about it.
Nadja's Alternate Hypnosis Scenes Explained
1 spoofs a TV sitcom & 2 recreate classic film endings
What We Do in the Shadows' finale features three different versions of Nadja's "perfect ending" cutscene, which are all available to watch on Hulu under the tab "Extra Hypnosis Features." The What We Do in the Shadows' finale premiere episode that aired first on FX on December 16 featured the cutscene of Guillermo and Nandor in bed doing a spoof on the popular sitcom Newhart, which ran on CBS for eight seasons between 1982 and 1990. The scene implies that Nandor and Guillermo are regular people in a romantic partnership and that the entire WWDITS series was just a dream that Nandor had.

What We Do in the Shadows Season 6 Finale Review - A Hilarious Meta Ending That Perfectly Sums Up The Series’ Best Qualities
The What We Do in the Shadows finale may not venture too deeply into its own nostalgia but it provides another ingenious entry to the beloved series.
The second cutscene spoofed the classic 1995 psychological thriller movie The Usual Suspects, recreating some of its most iconic scenes shot for shot. This one features Colin Robinson, The Guide, The Monster, and the vampires' neighbor, Sean Rinaldi. The Guide portrays Chazz Palminteri's Dave Kujan from The Usual Suspects and features a slew of flashback cuts from previous seasons of WWDITS, including Matt Berry's celebrated Jackie Daytona character. The third cutscene recreates the ending of Roman Polanski's Oscar-winning horror, Rosemary's Baby and features several core of the WWDITS cast.
The Vampire Crew's Old Black & White Film Explained
Guillermo discovers the vampires haven't changed at all
Guillermo expresses how upset he is about the documentary ending throughout the first half of the What We Do in the Shadows finale. Nadja explains that this isn't even the first time that the vampire crew has been filmed by a documentary crew. Colin pulls out an old film projector and plays "Vampires", an unreleased black and white film directed by the Maysles Brothers in 1958.
The Maysles Brothers, Albert and David, were actual siblings and documentary filmmakers who made films such as Salesman (1969) and Gimmie Shelter (1970). It also features Jerry announcing his decision to go into super-slumber, Laszlo constructing his Monster, and the return of Jackie Daytona. Guillermo discovers by watching the film that the vampires haven't changed at all.
Why Cravenworth's Monster Is So Aroused
He's anxious for Laszlo to make his Bride
The opening shtick of the finale episode features a heavily aroused Cravensworth's Monster, who makes several romantic offerings to The Guide. Later, during Guillermo's heartfelt monologue, The Monster tries to have sex with a fake bear in the back of the shot. The running gag makes for plenty of great comedic moments in the What We Do in the Shadows finale. Laszlo was still in the process of creating a female counterpart for The Monster at the beginning of the finale. The episode would have continued this story if it weren't for the documentary crew pulling the plug.
Why Nandor Wants To Get Into Crime-Fighting
Nandor is inspired after defending Guillermo in episode 10
At the start of the episode, Nandor tries to recruit Guillermo to become his partner in crime-fighting, which Guillermo reluctantly agrees to. After Nandor protects Guillermo from his abusive corporate boss in the previous episode, he is apparently inspired to become a hero and help other people in the community and wants Guillermo to be his sidekick. He pitches a secret lair similar to Batman's bat cave beneath the vampire's mansion where he and Guillermo will start their vigilante enterprise. Guillermo breaks the bad news to Nandor that he wants to go his own way and isn't interested in fighting crime but wants to continue being friends.
What's Next For Guillermo After The Finale
He is trapped in Nandor's secret vigilante lair
Guillermo attempts to step away from the vampires so that he can figure out his next steps after the documentary calls it a wrap. Even though Guillermo has achieved his biggest dream of becoming a vampire, he is no longer interested in pursuing that life, which is one of the more shocking conclusions from the finale. He tries to say goodbye to Nandor – once for the documentary's ending, and again for real. Guillermo plans to keep in touch with Nandor and the crew but is finally ready to walk his own path.
That is, until Nandor gives him no choice but to become his superhero sidekick. Nandor invites Guillermo into his coffin for the first time in the show's history, which initially seems like a kind gesture of gratitude. Instead, Nandor reveals that he has already constructed the vigilante lair which he pitched to Guillermo at the beginning of the episode. Nandor's coffin transforms into an elevator that takes them "like 1,000 feet under the house" to the lair. While this truly is the end of What We Do in the Shadows, it appears that Guillermo will continue to be a part of Nandor and the vampire crew for many years to come.
