Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time books, due to it transforming the series into the vast, sprawling epic that it's known for. While the first few novels are focused primarily on Rand's hero's journey, The Shadow Rising begins to expand events to multiple regions throughout the world. The TV show is living up to that reputation.
The various plotlines of season 3 are spread throughout The Wheel of Time's world. Rand al'Thor, Egwene, Moiraine, and Land have traveled to the Aiel Waste, where they're hoping to gather followers for Rand now that he's embraced his destiny as the Dragon Reborn. Nynaeve, Elayne, Mat, and Min are in Tanchico, pursuing the Black Ajah after the season 3 premiere's battle. Perrin has returned to the Two Rivers after threats from White Cloaks, but new threats have just begun to arrive.
Is Rand Losing Control Of His Powers?
The Male Half Of The One Power Is Unstable
Rand al'Thor has begun struggling with the prospect of being the Dragon Reborn since season 1, but we haven't seen his story become this dark until now. To recap, the reason why men aren't allowed to channel is that the male half of the One Power, saidin, was tainted by the Dark One, making it far more unstable and challenging to control. Rand is immensely powerful due to his innate affinity to the One Power, but controlling it will be a constant battle for him, as exhibited by his dialogue with Moiraine early in the episode.
Rand's incidental destruction crushes him, especially when he can't utilize the One Power to resurrect her.
Near the end of the episode, Rand is attacked by one of the Forsaken, Sammael, who nearly kills him before Aviendha intervenes. Rand retaliates by using the One Power to blast Sammael with lightning, killing him. Unfortunately, this also results in the young Aiel girl from earlier in the episode being killed. Rand's incidental destruction crushes him, especially when he can't utilize the One Power to resurrect her. This internal will only continue to intensify as The Wheel of Time seasons progress.
Sammael's death implies major changes for The Wheel of Time's adaptation of book 7, A Crown of Swords.

Our Protagonists Are In Pursuit Of The Black Ajah

We saw them going undercover at a tavern in episode 6, hoping to obtain information about the Black Ajah's whereabouts. Notably, they're also searching for a series of objects that, when combined, could be used to restrain a male channeler. The Domination Bands could be weaponized by the enemy to limit Rand's power and bring the Dragon Reborn into their control.

In the process of their search, Mat meets an old friend, Thom Merrilin, whom we haven't seen since season 1. Like in the books, season 1 had a fakeout where Thom looked to have been killed by a Fade. In the novels, Thom returns for the Cairhien plotline in The Great Hunt, where he meets up with Rand. However, despite being omitted from season 2, it was absolutely integral to bring him back for the Tanchico story, where he'll make a significant impact in the final episodes of season 3.
