As you may have already guessed by the fact this series was produced by DC, the origins of “Stargirl” as a character come from the mind of comic book writer Geoff Johns. In fact, Stargirl was the first-ever hero Johns wrote for DC and based the character on his late sister, with whom Stargirl shares the same name, which is perhaps why Johns has been so involved with the making of the series since day one. As an executive producer and writer of the source material, Johns wanted to bring “Stargirl” to the screen in a show that could be enjoyed by the whole family and took on a different tone from his previous work on “Doom Patrol” and “Swamp Thing”.In the actual role of Stargirl is American actress Brec Bassinger who has been acting since she was a child in shows such as the “School of Rock” TV series. As her career progressed, she has also starred in the thriller film 47 Metres Down: Uncaged and lent her voice to the “Black Box” podcast series and The Loud House animation. Stargirl remains one of Basinger’s biggest roles to date and creator Geoff Johns even stated that out of thousands of actors, Bassinger was the only one he saw bringing his first original hero to life authentically.

What Is Stargirl About?
The backstory of Stargirl rests on a decade-old battle between the Justice Society of America and the Injustice Society, where almost all of the former group were vanquished, and the society disbanded, seemingly forever. It is only when student Courtney Whitmore stumbles across the cosmic staff of former JSA hero Starman that the hopes of rebuilding the society can begin, all with the help of her stepdad Pat, who was Starman’s sidekick back in the day.
However, as the new generation of heroes forms, villains from the Injustice Society who survived the battle are beginning to rear their ugly heads, meaning it isn’t long before Courtney has to graduate from training and get down to the real business of defeating the bad guys, all while trying to navigate her way through the trenches of high school.
The third series of Stargirl hit the screen in 2022 and continues the story of this unlikely teen hero.
Shows Similar to Stargirl
With so many superhero shows and movies hitting the screen that span across a million different genres, it can be difficult to decipher what kind of superhero show you’re getting into. After all, something such as Wanda Vision is a world away from Doom Patrol.
The closest show to Stargirl in of tone is, of course, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, in which Stargirl even makes a small cameo. Outside the DC universe, the show has been favorable compared to Marvel’s Runaways, in which a band of teenage heroes must also save the day, this time, from their own parents. Stargirl will be an essential watch for fans of Legacies, Scream Queens, and The Umbrella Academy.
