Peacemaker is a superhero TV series created by James Gunn. It’s based on the DC Comics character with the same name, and Peacemaker is the first DC Extended Universe (DCEU) TV series. It’s also a spin-off from the 2021 film, The Suicide Squad. Set after the events of the film, the TV series further explores the life of Christopher Smith or Peacemaker.
John Cena stars as the title character, reprising his role from The Suicide Squad, alongside Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Chukwudi Iwuji, Freddie Stroma, and Robert Patrick. Viola Davis also reprises her DCEU film role as Amanda Waller in an uncredited cameo, as do Ezra Miller as Barry Allen or The Flash and Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry or Aquaman. Additionally, Dee Bradley Baker voices Peacemaker's pet eagle, Eagly, while Stephen Blackehart voices Charlie the Gorilla.
Viewers can watch Peacemaker and other DCEU shows on HBO Max.
Peacemaker: How It All Began
The DCEU show picks up where The Suicide Squad film left off. The storyline follows Peacemaker seeking redemption through a secretive government project. After recovering from the injuries he suffered during the events of The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker is forced to a mysterious black ops squad working on “Project Butterfly.” They are on a mission to identify and eliminate parasitic creatures that have taken over human bodies worldwide.
The eight-episode spinoff series is filmmaker James Gunn’s first foray into writing and directing for the small screen. Gunn conceived of the DCEU series after watching Cena portraying Peacemaker while filming The Suicide Squad. Due to Cena’s strength as a dramatic actor, Gunn wrote all eight episodes while completing The Suicide Squad during the COVID-19 pandemic. HBO Max ordered Peacemaker in September 2020, and filming began in Vancouver, Canada in January 2021. Gunn even directed five of the eight episodes. Gunn also chose to use hair metal songs for the soundtrack of the TV series, including “Do Ya Wanna Taste It” by Wig Wam for the show's opening titles.
