The live-action movie adaptation of the Broadway musical popularity of Wicked as a stage musical, Universal developed a film adaptation. Despite its inspiration, Wicked is not connected to The Wizard of Oz in a traditional sense; instead, it serves as a companion piece with similarities and differences.

Wicked follows the early days of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariane Grande) as an unlikely friendship emerges before they become the powerful forces in Oz, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. Whether someone is a fan of the 1939 movie or the musical show, Wicked received strong praise and multiple nominations at the Oscars, Golden Globes, and other award shows. With Universal already completing Wicked: Part Two ahead of its November 2025 release, there are different opportunities to watch the first film at home.
