Summary

  • Main characters die in Sweet Home S2, including fan favorite Ji-su, adding tension and stakes.
  • Season 3 focuses on new characters after time jump, shockingly killing off unexpected ones.
  • Jun-il kills his mother in brutal scene, then explodes unexpectedly, showcasing show's unpredictability.

A total of eight characters died in Sweet Home season 2, including multiple fan-favorites, proving that nobody is safe in the hit apocalyptic K-Drama. In a world where anyone can turn into a monster, it’s no surprise that many of the show’s characters come to a brutal end. With that said, it’s always a surprising shock when one or more of the main ensemble of a show is killed off. That uneasy feeling that nobody is safe adds a tremendous amount of tension and stakes to each episode.

Sweet Home season 3's cast focuses on many of the new characters introduced after the time jump following the end of episode 3. Even some of the remaining characters of the Green Home survivors disappear for much of season 2. However, one thing that shocked many viewers was which character died in Sweet Home season 2, as those that didn't make it past the finale alive not only included some who viewers felt were safe, but also several still alive in the Webtoon the show is based on.

10 Best K-Dramas To Watch After Sweet Home

Sweet Home's third and final season draws Cha Hyun-su's story to a close, but there are plenty of other K-dramas that match its unique appeal.

8 The Prime Minister

Dies Season 2, Episode 3

Not every character who died in Sweet Home season 2 will be missed by fans, and one that many were more than happy to see go was the Prime Minister (played by Jeong In-gyeom). While he didn't appear much in the show, the leader of the Korean government showed his potential for callousness. Many viewers felt he could be being set up as an antagonist for later on in the show, and he may well have been had he not been killed shortly after he debuted.

After ordering the bombing of the shelter where the Green Home residents reside to prevent the humans from turning into monsters, the Prime Minister almost orders the killing of Dr. Lim. Before he has the chance to, Tak and Kim arrive and kill the Prime Minister and everybody else in the meeting room. Tak and Kim go on to stop the remaining bombs from destroying the shelter and burn down the lab.

7 Mrs. Oh

Dies Season 2, Episode 6

Another character who died in Sweet Home season 2 that was relatively minor was Mrs. Oh, played by Byun Jung-hee. Mrs. Oh is the mother of Oh Jun-il (King Dong-young), and her death was both incredibly shocking and demonstrated that Jun-il may not be the most mentally stable of the remaining survivors. Mrs. Oh had been injured in a prior episode, and while she appeared to be healing, Jun-il couldn't bear to see his mother suffer any longer.

Jun-il decides the best way to free his mother, Mrs. Oh, from her intense pain is for her to die. He first attempts to poison her with herbicide, but when that doesn't work, Jun-il rips the door off of her cell and brutally stabs her to death with a long piece of metal. Though his intentions were in the right place, it's a brutal and shocking moment that really establishes the carnage this season wrought.

6 Jun-il

Dies Season 2, Episode 6

While Jun-il killing his mother, Mrs. Oh, was a shocking scene in Sweet Home, it was dwarfed by the unexpected death of Jun-il shortly after. In a completely unexpected turn of events, Jun-il's matricide wasn't the start of a new character arc. While it seemed like the act was surely setting up a dark turn on Jun-il's narrative, this turned out not to be the case.

Shortly after stabbing his mother to death, Jun-il explodes. It's never explained exactly why he explodes, though like everything else in Sweet Home is almostcertainly linked to the monsters roaming the city outside the apartment complex. Dr. Lim watches with fascination and horror. It's a shocking scene, where both mother and son disappear from the series. On the other hand, one has to wonder how Jun-il might have lived with himself after knowing what he did to his mother.

5 Sang-jin

Dies Season 2, Episode 4

Do Sang-jin (Park Won-Suk) was a recurring character in Sweet Home season 2, and appeared in 5 episodes. While he was never a character many viewers felt was safe from being killed before the season finale, his death was still a shocking and violent moment (like almost every other death in the show). His final moments do serve a narrative purpose though, as it's through the death of Do Sang-jin that the capabilities of one of the most mysterious monsters in Sweet Home season 2 are revealed.

After following Eun-yu to a supermarket, Sang-jin tells Jun-il and Dong-gi that they should kill Eun-yu to gain Ji's favor. Jun-il refuses and runs off, but Dong-gi hesitantly decides to go along with the plan. Later on, Eun-yu figures out the duo's plan. While two men chase down Eun-yu as she flees, they encounter the mystery girl (Ah-yi), season 2's monster child, that paralyzed Dong-gi before. She possesses Dong-gi and kills Sang-jin.

4 Su-yeong

Dies Season 2, Episode 2

Of all the deaths in Sweet Home season 2, one of the most heartbreaking was that of young Kim Su-yeong (played by Heo Yool). Understanding what happened to Su-yeong can be a little confusing as her death isn’t clearly shown on screen. However, by the beginning of episode 3, it's clear that Su-yeong was killed by Jae-hwan after he turns into a monster.

She’s attacked by him after his transformation in the night, while traveling on a bus headed to a new safe location. The episode ends with the remaining survivors grieving over death. Yeong-su cries for his lost sister, and Lee Eun-yu cradles her still body. It's a harrowing and heartbreaking moment that reminds both the characters and the audience just how quickly life can be stripped away in this vicious world.

3 Jae-hwan

Dies Season 2, Episode 2

Almost equally as tragic as the death of Su-yeong in Sweet Home season 2 — and partly because it was tied directly to it — was when Jae-hwan (Lee Joon-woo) had his final moments on the show. On the bus to a new, safe location, Jae-hwan transforms into a monster and kills Su-yeong by strangling her to death. The survivors try to kill him by shooting him, but this only makes his human form transform more monstrous until his entire torso is a mutilated, monstrous face.

Chasing the survivors off the bus, he's doused with alcohol until Ji-Su, bearing the brunt of his ear-piercing screams, sets him on fire with a blow torch. After just witnessing the murder of a young girl, his death feels justified. It's always tragic to see a character turn into a monster, but after his murder of Su-yeung, it's a necessary evil.

2 Yi Kyung

Dies Season 2, Episode 8

In Sweet Home season 2's powerful and heart-wrenching finale, Hyun-soo is forced to kill Yi Kyung (Lee Si-young) after she transforms into a monster. After succumbing to her injuries from the boat fire, Yi Kyung's daughter, Ah-yi, holds her hand as she dies, purposefully transforming her into a monster. It's a surprisingly emotional moment, though one that's shortly broken for the violent chaos that makes up the bulk of Sweet Home to resume.

There's a moment of peace before suddenly, her body contorts, and the left side of Yi Kyung's face turns black. Hyun-soo is left with no choice but to fight her. Due to his powers, he can see into her mind and see her inner turmoil and pain. Taking pity on her, to relieve her internal pain of feeling like she failed as a mother, Hyun-soo kills her. It’s a dramatic and sad end to one of the show's main characters.

1 Ji-su

Dies Season 2, Episode 3

In a shocking and heartbreaking twist, the second season of Sweet Home killed one of its beloved main characters. Of all the characters who died in Sweet Home season 2, there were perhaps none that surprised viewers quite as much as Ji-su (Park Gyu-Young). Ji-su dies when her legs get stuck beneath the wreckage caused by a military strike on citizens, which was organized in the hope of preventing new monsters from awakening.

Although we don’t see Ji-su die on screen, it cuts to black as the wreckage is about to collapse. She died trying to save Yeong-su, who, even in her last moments, screamed at him to leave and save himself. A year-long time jump confirms her tragic death, and it's a gut punch, hammering home just how devastating Sweet Home Season 2’s saddest death truly is.
