Despite the progress Jimmy made in Shrinking's wisest character, Paul (Harrison Ford), who told Jimmy to reach out when he is having a breakdown. Before the episode's final emotional scene of Jimmy asking Paul for help, he calls someone else first.

Kiara Was Introduced In Shrinking's First Episode

While Jimmy's friends go out to celebrate Brian (Michael Urie) and Charlie (Devin Kawaoka) adopting a baby, Jimmy stays home and calls Kiara (Ashley Elyse Rogers). Kiara is one of the escorts that Jimmy frequently spent time with in the year after Tia's death. In Shrinking's first episode, she is in the pool and contributes to waking up Jimmy's neighbor, Liz (Christa Miller). She also appeared in season 2, episode 8's flashbacks, with Alice coming home, only to find her father in the kitchen with two escorts.

Kiara is surprised to receive a call from Jimmy in Shrinking's most recent episode, as she has not heard from him in a long time. When he asks her to hang out with him, she explains that she is no longer an escort. Kiara offers to reach out to friends who are still escorts and to have Jimmy call her back. Despite this offer, Kiara emphasizes that she hopes Jimmy does not call her back, making it clear that she does not think this is the best way for Jimmy to deal with his current issues.

He Is Still Stuck In The Past

Jimmy's call to Kiara is a sign of how much he is struggling. When Shrinking began, Jimmy was using Kiara as a way to distract himself from the pain he was desperate not to face. He has confronted some of the pain since then and has made tremendous progress, but the events with Louis and Alice have caused Jimmy to relapse. That regression comes full-circle as Jimmy tries to fall back onto the same behaviors he exhibited in the Apple TV+ series' first episode.

Despite this low point, Jimmy does deserve credit for reaching out to Paul at the end of the episode.

Part of what makes this interaction particularly sad is the juxtaposition between Jimmy and Kiara. While Kiara has moved onto new things in her life, Jimmy is still stuck in the past, and clinging to old habits that he knows will not help him.
